Persuasive Speech Assignment
Purpose: To help you learn how to effectively write and deliver a 5-6 minute persuasive speech. To accomplish this purpose, you will need to persuade your audience to action on an issue of social justice or social significance. In this speech you are trying to change your audience’s attitudes, actions, or beliefs about a social injustice or issue that you are passionate about addressing. Assignment: To extemporaneously deliver a 5-6 minute speech designed to persuade the audience about a problem facing society. Skills: The persuasive speech assignment is designed to help you practice skills that will also be used to deliver successful presentations throughout college, your professional career, and in your civic life. In this assignment you will:
• Analyze and select information from credible and appropriate primary and secondary sources (Chapter 7)
• Select a topic and write a speech that considers the audience to which you will deliver (Chapter 5)
• Write a speech including three main points, an introduction, and a conclusion, following one of the persuasive organizational patterns and following strong outlining principals (Chapter 6 and 9)
• Practice and then deliver this speech, extemporaneously, to an audience (Chapter 4) Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content from our textbook:
• The persuasive process, types of persuasive speeches, and organizational patterns (Chapter 9 and 10)
• Elements of a complete introduction and conclusion, as well as outlining principles (Chapter 6)
• Documenting sources by creating both oral citations and an APA reference page (Chapter 7)
• Analyzing and building arguments for persuasion and critically evaluating content for and avoiding the use of logical fallacies (Chapters 9 and 10)
Tasks: To complete this assignment, you should:
1. Select a topic that can be presented to your audience in a persuasive manner and conduct research on this topic
2. Select a minimum of five (5) different sources that can be used in writing your speech 3. Prepare a typed, full sentence speech outline using the elements defined in Chapter 6
and Chapter 9 and that can be delivered in 5-6 minutes 4. Use the sources you have selected throughout your speech by writing oral citations that
include author name(s), credentials, publishing source, and publishing date within your typed outline. You will deliver these aloud during your speech (see, Chapter 7 and Canvas).
5. Create an APA reference page for the sources you have selected (see, Chapter 7 and Canvas)
6. Turn in a rough draft to the TurnItIn.com Canvas assignment for instructor feedback and then make revisions based upon feedback
7. Practice delivering the speech outside of class and complete the workshop during the corresponding Delivery Workshop Day
8. Create and practice with an engaging, clear, and error-free PowerPoint presentation that complements your speech (see, Chapter 8 for tips)
9. Turn in your final speech draft before the 1st day of speeches. All outlines must be turned in to the Turnitin.com assignment on Canvas. Late, incomplete, or unrevised drafts will result in a deduction of points from the speech score. Speech scores will be withheld until a final draft is correctly submitted
10. Deliver your speech on the day you have been assigned 11. On your assigned speech day prepare the following:
1. Your speaking outline (one notecard with a condensed version of the speech
written out, front and back). Be prepared to show this notecard to your instructor prior to delivery.
2. Prepare your physical speaking space – consider lighting, background, and noise (feel free to present in cars, bathrooms, hallways, any place that will maximize success).
12. Once your oral presentation is complete, watch your speech and take notes on areas of strengths and places for improvement in preparation for your final self- reflection paper that will be due at the end of the semester.
