Dr. Laini Kavaloski Project #3 assignment, spring 2021 First draft due April 29 Final draft and portfolio due on May 6 What and When: Create a series of comic panels PLUS a two-page close image/textual analysis of your own

comic. Students are required to submit this project in two versions: first, as a draft for peer review on April 29, then in significantly revised form on May 4. All versions and peer comments are to be handed in as a portfolio. [20% of course grade]

How: 1) Part One: Create a series of comic panels (totaling 2-4 pages) depicting an important event or

realization from you OWN life. You should make AT LEAST 2 DRAFTS of your comic. (You will hand them all in together.) Incorporate at least FOUR COMIC DEVICES that we have learned this semester (slowed down or speeded up time, shifts in size of panel, symbols, color and tone considerations, borders or bleeds). You may create a hand-drawn comic or use Comic Life (a free online platform). Please print a PDF if you use Comic Life https://plasq.com/apps/comiclife/macwin/ (download 30 free trial).

2) Part Two: Now analyze your own comic**. The analysis should be two full pages, double spaces

with a heading in the upper left-hand corner. A) Your first page should describe the event you depict in detail. This should include: character, setting, keywords, perspective(s), symbols, narrator, theme(s). As you describe the panels, pay special attention to images, colors, tone, style, border use, symbols, panel size and so forth. B) The second page should discuss the successes/failures of your comic; what does it do well? What emotions does it evoke? Was this intentional? What changes did you make to your earliest draft? How is your final draft different than your earlier draft? What challenges/problems did you have in creating the comic? How could your comic be improved or made more interesting? Be an honest critic of your own work. Compare your devices and techniques to either Bechdel or Satrapi. What do you do differently? Do you use any devices or ideas from their work? Did either of these authors inspire ideas or methods in your work? **Don’t forget to use MEAL plan to structure each paragraph in your analysis. As you write about your own comic be sure that each paragraph has a topic sentence (main claim), evidence (refer to a specific part of a panel or to a panel), an analysis of the evidence, and finally a link back to your main claim.
