COM 259 Project #2 - Interview Assignment
Objective: Allow students to practice communication skills and interview a working professional who works in the area of the students future career aspirations. Students are to learn firsthand how communication relates to “real world” working situations such as problem solving, small group communication, leadership, effective meetings, and presentations in the workplace.
What to do? 4 Steps to Success
1. Find Someone to Interview.
Students should locate a business professional in the industry in which they wish to work. Students should request a 20 - 30 minute interview. The interview occurs face-to-face but if this is not possible then phone conversations or video conferencing (Skype, Facetime, etc.) is acceptable. IMPORTANT! It should NOT be conducted by email or text (this does not help to develop your verbal and non-verbal communication skills).
2. Develop your questions.
Write down at least 10 interview questions that pertain to items noted in the text book (Chapters 6-11). Topics to talk about could include the areas of interviewing, small group communication, leadership, effective meetings, and presentations in the workplace. Find out what working professional communication skills are used and how they help the individual in their working environment. (NOTE: These questions must be turned in as an appendix at the end of the essay).
3. Conduct the Interview
Ask for permission to voice record the interview (recording on your phone will work but remember to practice and try it out to make sure it works). If permission is not granted, be prepared to take extensive handwritten notes.
Documentation of the persons interviewed is to be done by obtaining a business card (take a picture of it OR screen shot to include in your essay) or fill out information form (see below) from interviewee to verify that the interview was conducted.

4. Write the Essay
After the interview, write a 4-5-page (double-spaced, #12 font, APA format) paper that applies course concepts to the information the professional provided during the interview. Discuss your findings and the importance and function of communication in the professional working world. Give specific examples obtained in the interview and use proper APA in text citations and references. Note: the 4-5 pages of text does not include the title page, appendix (list of ten questions page), documentation of interviewee (picture of business card or form noted above) and reference page.
Evaluation: Your grade (30 points) will be determined by the following criteria:
Interview questions (5 points)
Documentation and quality of the interviewee (5 points)
4-5-page essay paper applying course concepts to the interview findings (20 points)
Due date is noted on Canvas and turned in on Canvas as one document which includes the essay with the appendix page (10 questions), documentation page, and reference page all in one document.
