HIPAA refers to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

It is a US legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding an individual's medical information.

Patients and their parents should have access and should be allowed access to information regarding their adult children’s health.

In the event a patient has diabetes and data is held from their parents, parents would not be able to take care of the patient without knowing their conditions.

Therefore it is imperative that parents are allowed to access their children’s medical information regardless of their age.

Holding medical information from patients or will deny them the opportunity to feel in control and to face it.

Withholding medical information from parents’ would deny them a chance to know how to handle or treat their children’s medical issues at home and away from the doctors.

In my opinion, I recommend that patients be allowed full access to their medical information and parents too be allowed access to their children's health information until the age of 21.
