week 6
KM Post:
I watched Airplane for this week's discussion. Airplane is a hilarious movie which uses miniatures and sound design to already heighten the humor of the film. There is not one moment in this film when I wasn't laughing. The special effects, at least from what I could see, were all practical effects. The plane was a miniature and the set design seemed to either be real locations or a stage set. I believe the only stage sets used were the inside of the plane and the radio tower. The most notable sound design came from the radio tower with its constant beeping of alarm and the people ignoring it constantly, and the fake slap noise which never stopped being amusing. The most common scene used in other media from this film was the slapping of the hysterical woman which uses this fake slap noise. Another good moment of sound was when the plane crashed down. Another sound moment is actually one throughout the film of the aircraft itself, if the movie wasn't in a flashback or the radio tower, there was a continuous sound of the aircraft which made the audience more immersit in the film.
Color is throughout the whole movie and used to show the light heartedness of the film, such as the bright colors used during the aircraft sequences like when the dinner is being brought out and you know it is bad. The color palette is muted for when Ted has his tough days flashback to show how it was a different time. Another use of color was how the people in the radio tower wore more subdued colors because they were side characters and were not as important as the main characters.
