The idea that I would choose is launch the new product under Coke brand in addition to Coke (as they did later). The reason I would do this option is because, if the market is slowly declining on the original flavor of Coke, then formulating a new recipe that beats the flavor will be your best option. Because, if people are getting tired of the taste and switch to Pepsi for the flavor, then simply putting more money into advertising the declining product is not a smart decision. I think that it is smart to create a new flavor and keep the old flavor, to hit the new market that is looking for a different flavor, while keeping your current customers happy with the old flavor.

The company can test the new product side by side of the old product, so it won't lose its current position in the market place. Then if indeed the flavor is better the decline of the Coke Classic will be rapid and then can discontinue the classic flavor and move forward with the reformulated recipe.  This will cause less of a negative connotation toward the new flavor which will should boost the new flavor sales much quicker.
