Nutrition it vital to promoting good health and this does not stop as we get older.  The older adult population have multiple chronic conditions that they are living with (Office Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2017).  Not only do older adults have multiple chronic condition but, they have other limitations such has most live on a fixed budget, the ability to go to the grocery store are just couple but, they could have many other limitations that affect their nutrition.

There are programs available in communities but, people may not be aware of them or know how to utilize them.  One nice program is Meals on Wheels will deliver meals to the home another is Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program(SNAP) (Edelman, Kudzma, & mandle, 2014).  There are many stores not that are promoting grocery delivery but, some come with a membership fee.

Nutrition is only one part of good health promotion, there also needs to be some time of activity or exercise.  Some communities have senior community centers, this is only good if the person can get to them.  They provide nutrition classes, exercise classes and many more usually free or discounted for seniors.  There was one in the community lived in called the Dietert Center and there was also local transport for the elder too so they could get to their appointments, shopping and to other things they needed.  It too was free to the elderly.  There are also simple exercises that could be done at home, ones that can be done while sitting and these can be taught to them.

Stress manage is another key item to promote good health.  Both nutrition and exercise helps with stress.  Another thing that needs to be managed is sleep hygiene, sleep deprivation can cause concentration problems, depression and will increase the feeling of stress (Edelman, Kudzma, & mandle, 2014).  In elderly cognitive thinking can decline and only become worse with lack of sleep.  Having social support whether be friends or family.  A good support group is church.  They have people who will help the elderly to the services and the minister also is a good person to help with counseling and support.  Keeping the elderly activity within their community is important and keeps them healthy.

When recommending it is important to understanding your patient’s needs and their availability to afford or get to them.  It is also important to know how much family support they have.  There are many things to factor in with caring for the elderly.  These are some of the recommendations for elderly patients.
