Addressing Diversity
Introduction
Diversity in education is the way that students and teachers alike learn from each other to
create a positive and fruitful learning environment. As a teacher, my school really focuses on
promoting cultural awareness and how we can input cultural learning instruction.
MacPhee,Kreutzer, and Fritz, (1994) used interventions to help increase students' critical
thinking by getting them to become more open minded to diversity. They stated “ the purpose
was to promote cultural pluralism and social equality by using instructional materials that are
appropriate for diverse students that are integrated “(p. 705). This points out how diversity and
cultural learning are both connected with one another. In today's classrooms diversity has been
growing creating a huge impact on the way students are learning. This represents a huge role in
different cultures , languages , religions and more. This analysis will help conduct research
studies about Diversity and how it influences teaching and learning.
Part 1: Diversity Self-Knowledge
According to Joseph, “ Diversity is about embracing one another’s uniqueness” (2003). Although
human beings can be comparable, everyone has their own uniqueness and sparkle in their own
special way. Schools are becoming more widely diverse and it’s been increasing in classroom
settings in all grade levels. Each and every student has unique characteristics that they bring
into a classroom that creates a diverse setting within the classroom such as different religions,
culture, language and many more. It is important that teachers and educators find a proficient
way to deliver instruction and understand their students strengths, accomplishments
,backgrounds, and what is valuable to them .

Diversity Reflection
Reflecting upon personal characteristics of diversity, I am a Middle Eastern, middle-aged
female that is single. I was born in Palestine and moved to the States when I was two. My first
language is Arabic but I had a hard time speaking it. Growing up in the west I knew limited
things about my culture and religion. My father decided it was time to move back to my country
and that is when I realized how much my culture, religion, and language are very important. It
took me a while to learn Arabic and I faced many challenges in my life. I moved back to the
United States and became a teacher. I was worried about how staff, students will accept my
image because I wear the Hijab. I was really worried about being judged and felt insecure
because I was the only one to wear it unlike back in Palestine. Many students ask me so many
questions about it and I am always curious. I gained more confidence and started to find books
that I can read to my students and introduce them to what a Hijab is and why it is worn. This is
one type of diverse characteristic. Now when my students see me walk around they are eager
to learn a word in Arabic which makes me so happy that they are willing to learn more about
different languages and cultures.
Diverse Characteristics
Uniqueness is when people are different. If we are all the same nothing new comes up.
Many people may fear being different. As an educator I always teach everyone to love and
appreciate it yourself. This always helps gain strength and confidence. When we all become a
diverse community we eliminate the idea of being judged, insecurities and even fear.
Diversity in the Classroom
Everyone is unique and different in a special way. The best part about teaching is
learning more about your students everyday. Getting to know your students helps build a great
relationship and trust. Students will start to love to open up more and will perform better at their

highest ability. Showing how much you care about them will help them open up and they will be
more engaged and involved with who they are. Creating a sharing activity can be a great start
and students will start to develop great listening and speaking skills. They are able to open up
who they are and express how they feel , share new things that mean a lot with them. It is
always important to show respect to one another and create value.

Part 2: Personal SWOT Analysis
The SWOT will help self reflect on some strengths , weaknesses and opportunities . It
will create an analysis that will allow and help understand what student diversity is .The tool
helps allow a chance for self reflection.

Understanding how an educator identifies with their own unique features will help them
set expectations and goals for their learners. A solid grasp of personality may be utilized to teach
students how to recognize their own, as well as to enhance lesson plans that are devoid of bias. A

Culturally Responsive Teaching and the ELL paradigm utilized is mainstream education.
Students' backgrounds are frequently commemorated via holiday festivities, performance art
department music and dance, and communication in students' original languages. To aid ELL
student learning and comprehension, teachers frequently use a variety of delivery methods,
including visuals, models and devices or technologies.
Educators' major purpose is to deliver teachings that adapt to different cultural
backgrounds and diversity. Students flourish at higher rates when they are exposed to diversity in
the classroom, according to research.According to study (Wells et al., 2016), children who are
exposed to a broad group of peers have enhanced cognitive abilities including critical thinking
and problem-solving. As a result, instructors should make a concerted effort to introduce and
position kids from various backgrounds. Each kid has an equal opportunity of learning vital
skills and knowledge that will prepare them for lifelong success by exposing them to variety
while adjusting to their individual cultures and requirements.
Universal Design for Learning
In Universal Design for Learning, teachers design classes that utilize a variety of
classroom engagement strategies. Teachers also use a variety of resources to impart material,
including textbooks, the Internet, and interactive multimedia. This can help learning become
more engaging and cover students of all levels. In Locke Elementary each student has their own
1-1 Chromebook or Ipad. There are many great apps or websites the school has subscribed on
that helps educate the students and also practice on all subjects whether in school or even at
home. Some great websites are IXL, Prodigy, Freckle,Starfall. RazKids, and ABC Mouse.

Conclusion
Finally, the world is filled with individuals who are truly one-of-a-kind. Race, gender,
and socioeconomic class are some of the qualities that define a varied person. The educational
demands of a student are influenced and shaped by these ancestral qualities or cultural
beliefs/morals. In addition, training should be flexible and appropriate to the needs of each kid.
In order to restructure classes and deliver equally accessible teachings, educators must engage in
continuous self-reflection. Regardless of a teacher's background or cultural upbringing, the
fundamental educational goal should remain student life readiness. "A balance of student self-
awareness and community acceptance of others is required for success in a diverse classroom"
(Morrow, 2014).
