Criminal justice Discussion

Discussion Question   at least 120 words

Many of you have expressed an interest in either pursuing a career in Forensic Science (Crime Scene Investigation) or just have an interest in the topic.  This week I want you to view the video and then pick ONE aspect of forensic science and talk about how it applies to solving crimes.  Here are some options:

· Photography/Videography

· DNA

· Tire Track Analysis

· Tool Mark Analysis

· Fingerprint recovery - Patent vs. Latent and methods to recovery

· Securing a Crime Scene

· How to Document a scene properly

· CCTV

· Firearm analysis

· Identifying bullets/ strike marks

These are just a few ideas.  If you have others feel free to share!  Try to provide a real-life example of how forensic science solved a crime!

The Murder of Three Prostitutes - 1990 I chose this case because when people think of prostitutes they don't really pay much mind to them, sadly its pretty common for them to even be found dead, so why not do a case that not many people would do.  Although this murder happened in 1990 it was recently solved in 2013. Donna Perry, 61 was recently charged with the murder of three prostitutes, with a 22 caliber hang gun.DNA evidence was submitted in 2009. Donna who was originally known as Douglas before her name changed was arrested in 2012 for possession of illegal firearms. Well the DNA captured from the case that re opened in 2009 was sent to the federal database were it matched up to Perry. They also found women's panties that looked very old in her closet. Perry was moved from prison in Texas to Spokane were the murder happened to face charges. DNA analysis can go a long way. No one has the same prints, and can easy be traced with fingerprint markings

Alternative Light Photography

Alternative Light Photography: Technology that helps a forensic nurse quickly ascertain how much physical damage a patient has suffered.  This can be the difference between life and death. Although they have many tools at their disposal to help make these calls quickly and accurately, Alternative Light Photography is one of the tools to help see damage even before it is visible on the skin.

A camera such as the Omnichrome uses blue light and orange filters to clearly show bruising below the skin’s surface. The camera's operator will turn on the alternative light source, use filters or additional flashes, and turn off the room's light before taking a picture. If there is a bruise under the skin, there will be a darkened spot on the skin in the picture. It can help detect evidence of strangulation to help law enforcement with their case.
