Application to Nursing Practice

Although many nursing decisions are based on habit and do not require in- depth reasoning, sometimes higher-thinking skills are required to make a decision that is beyond routine.

After the process of thinking critically, the nurse must decide on a course of action by making a decision about what is best, especially when more than one course of action is available. When faced with multiple needs of one patient or multiple needs of multiple patients, the nurse prioritizes the needs to determine which to address first, examine the pros and cons of each option, determine which needs can be delegated to others, and follow through on the decided course of action.
