Chapter 8
Enter as many reasons as you can think of not to exercise. Then come up with quick excuse busters.
Here are some examples: I can’t afford a gym.
· Who needs a gym? You can get all the exercise you need on your own.
· Check out campus or community facilities.
· Walk or jog outdoors.
· Invest in inexpensive hand weights.
The gym is always crowded.
· Always? Have you tried Sunday mornings, Friday evening at 7:00, Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m.? Ask the staff what times are quietest.
· If there are lines for the weight machines, use hand weights. If the treadmills are occupied, go to the outdoor track.
· Sign up for small-group training or classes to guarantee yourself a spot.
It’s finals week.
· Break up study sessions with mini-workouts.
· Burn off tension with a jog.
· Unwind after studying with stretches, yoga, or Pilates.
I go home and just don’t feel like leaving.
· Arrange to meet friends at the gym. If you know they’re waiting, you’ll go out even if it’s rainy and cold.
· Sign up for a gym class during the day so that you don’t have to make an extra trip.
· Recruit an exercise buddy so that the two of you can motivate each other to get moving.
