Chapter 3

Classroom Management is About Effective Instruction

  • Effective instruction involves 4 critical elements:

1. Engage in critical reflective practices.

2. Shepherd students into high engagement in course content.

3. Frame all aspects of students’ learning experiences.

4. Build a vibrant community.

  • Effective teachers constantly think about solving problems related to their educational practice.
  • They constantly engage in reflection.
  • This type of reflection is especially important in urban schools because teachers sometimes contribute to classroom management problems.
  • This sometimes occurs as a result of dissonance between teachers and students.

Critical Reflective Practices

Critical Self-Reflection

  • Critical self-reflection is a deeply reflective process in which teachers examine their perspectives, mindsets, and beliefs about how they approach their work.
  • Teachers should question what they have done to advance the learning opportunities of their students.
  • Recognizing that they may have acted in a biased way allows teachers to improve their instruction.

Engaging in Critical Self-Reflection

  • One way to engage in critical self-reflection is through writing a critical self-reflective autobiography. See page 63.
  • Critical reflection needs to occur in the flolowing areas:
  • Unit Planning
  • Daily Lesson Planning
  • Teachers should share their critical reflective practices and model this practice with students.

High Student Engagement

In order for high student engagement to occur teachers need to provide lessons that

  • Focus on student comprehension of rigorous content.
  • Draw upon students’ cultural backgrounds.
  • Provide students with multiple ways to learn.
  • Allow classroom knowledge to be co-constructed by students.

Positive Framing

  • Optimism and enthusiasm
  • Communicating student success
  • Demonstrated regard for teaching and learning

Building A Classroom Community

  • Acknowledging broader social contexts.
  • Creating a safe space for learners.
  • Appropriate physical classroom design.
