Chapter 10 Discussion Sample

St. Petersburg College participates in the Community College Student Survey of Engagement (CCSSE). A

The CCSSE uses a Likert scale for many questions. For example, question 4a asks

“In your experiences at this college, how often in the past year have you asked questions in class or contributed to class discussions?” 1 = Never 2 = Sometimes 3 = Often 4 = Very Often

The CCSSE involves 5 benchmarks (Active/Collaborative Learning, Student Effort, Academic Challenge,

Student-Faculty interaction and Support for Learners). Each benchmark is an index, composed of various

questions included in the survey. In the creation of the benchmarks, standardization is used. Survey items are rescaled so that all items are on the same scale (0 to 1). Factor analysis was used to create the

benchmarks using the rescaled data.
