Project Scope #1
1
Project – Case Study Scenarios The course project will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned by producing a project plan for a chosen scenario.
Carefully read the case studies. The decision of which case study to use will be made in Unit 1. Once the case study is chosen and submitted to your instructor, you will use this information to compile your course project.
Case Study Scenario 1 – Digital Fusion Digital Fusion, an electronics company located in San Jose, California, recently performed a strategic planning session that suggested several project initiatives for the company to consider. One such initiative is to develop a Web site to market its electronic products to both consumers and businesses. The feasibility study indicated that the project would increase Digital Fusion's market share and increase the organizational revenue by 15 percent during the first operational year, and 25 percent for the next 4 years. The total budget allocated to this project is 500,000 dollars.
Digital Fusion recently issued a request for proposal (RFP) to seven qualified vendors, to solicit proposals to design and develop the Web site initiative. The RFP included the following functional requirements:
• An intranet application to allow other businesses to securely access and order the products from Digital Fusion. The business-to-business application should be able to place orders, track orders, view invoices, and review pricing contracts for the business customers of Digital Fusion.
• An Internet application to allow consumers to securely access and order the products from Digital Fusion. The business-to-customer application should allow consumers of Digital Fusion to place orders, track orders, pay through credit cards, and print order confirmations.
• The site should be able to interface with the existing inventory control system to determine product availability, and to appropriately adjust the inventory based on placement of orders.
• The site should also interface with the existing customer relationship management system to store customer information and provide customer specific information.
• The application should be easy to use, be compatible with all browsers, and perform adequately even with a 56K modem connection.
Your company, Creative Consultants Inc., a service integration firm located in Los Angeles, is one of the preferred vendors of Digital Fusion and has received the RFP from Digital Fusion. The marketing director at Creating Consultants has pulled together a team of analysts to provide a good response to the RFP. While the marketing and administrative piece of the proposal will be performed by the marketing team, your team is responsible for determining the project scope, size, time estimates, cost estimates, and schedule.

Preventative Care, a health care organization located in Peoria, Illinois, has decided to design, develop, and implement a medical record system (MRS). This company began 5 years ago, as a group of physicians sharing one location. Since then, Preventative Care has expanded to five locations. While a manual system was manageable several years ago, it has become a nightmare because of exponential patient growth and multiple locations. Patient charts have to be transferred between sites, based on the location of the appointment. Furthermore, when patients show up without prior appointments, it takes multiple phone calls and the faxing of medical records to provide quality care. This results in duplication of efforts and missing charges. Hence, the physician group has decided to invest in a medical information system as a necessity for operational survival. This company would like the system to be put into place as soon as possible and they have allocated a 250,000 dollars budget for this initiative.
You company, Creative Consultants Inc., a service integration firm located in Chicago, has been referred by one of the directors of Preventative Care and has received the RFP from Preventative Care. This RFP has been sent to three vendors and includes the following functional and technical requirements:
• The new system will allow for access of patient records from any location. Similarly, the physician schedule can be managed centrally, thus reducing operating expenses.
• The solution can be either a design/development of a new medical information system, or use off-the-shelf software to meet the following functional needs.
• The physicians require a browser-based application so that all of the existing computers, including some that are four years old, can be utilized.
• The Web server and database server should be located at the main site where billing services are performed. This is the only place where physical security can be guaranteed.
• The application should include the following medical record modules:
o Patient information.
o Patient insurance information.
o Patient visits.
o Physician information.
o Physician appointments and schedule.
o Patient billing.
o Patient allergies.
o Patient diagnosis.
o Patient vaccinations.
o Patient medication orders and prescriptions.
o Patient lab orders and results.

Case Study Scenario 3 – Little Italy Pizzeria Little Italy Pizzeria got its start in 1995 as a simple carry out pizza store in Richmond, Indiana. The owners boast that they are first-generation Italians who cook authentic Italian-style pizza. Little Italy has since grown to be a franchise chain with three eat-in restaurants and five carry- out pizza stores. They have become quite well known in the eastern Indiana area and that popularity has had a direct effect on demands.
Ralph, the main owner of the franchise, has been getting many phone calls from people looking for a Little Italy franchise. The family has wisely decided not to expand further without the proper infrastructure in place. Currently, Little Italy is run entirely with paper records. By comparison, other pizza franchises offer a computer system to franchisees, and the costs for such a system are included in the monthly franchise fee. The family has decided to invest in an information system, which has become a necessity for franchise expansion and growth. Ralph would like the system to be up and running as soon as possible, and has allocated a 250,000 dollars budget for this initiative.
You company, Creative Consultants Inc., a service integration firm in Indianapolis, Indiana, has been referred by one of Ralph's friends. They have received the RFP from Little Italy Pizzeria. This RFP has been sent to three vendors and includes the following functional and technical requirements:
• The solution can either be a design/development of a new information system, or use off-the-shelf software.
• The family requires a browser-based application so that a franchisee with an existing computer can be hooked into the franchise system.
• The Web server and database server should be located at the corporate office, and the new system should allow access of customer order information at franchise locations from there. Ralph is predicting growth of 10 franchise locations within 2 years and 50 locations within 5 years. Hence, the hardware selection should be flexible enough to be expandable.
• The application should include the following modules:
o Product information.
o Franchise information.
o Food inventory.
o Customer information.
o Direction details.
o Order details.
o Order tracking (delivery and cancellations).
o Accounting.
