ASSESSMENT TASK

This assessment task is a portfolio of evidence and it is designed to assess your ability to build a workplace learning environment.

Students are required to:

· Select an organisation they are familiar with (an organisation they have access to primary data to); or

· Use this scenario:

Lonsdale Institute is planning to build up their marketing department in Melbourne with knowledge and skills around compliance for the education and marketing industry, digital marketing and project management.

In this assessment, you will be asked to identify learning opportunities, develop a learning plan, facilitate and promote learning and monitor the effectiveness of learning.

In order to diagnose learning needs of the marketing team in this scenario, it is recommended that you conduct a training needs analysis on 3 or 4 fellow classmates who will play the role of marketing team members.

The roles that you can use for the role play are:

· Marketing Manager

· Promotion and Event Coordinator

· Marketing Officer 1

· Marketing Officer 2

The assessment comprises of the following sections:

SECTION 1: Create learning opportunities

SECTION 2: Facilitate and promote learning

SECTION 3: Monitor and improve learning effectiveness

SECTION 1 – Create learning opportunities

In this section, you are required to:

· Determine and clarify the scope of learning needs for the organisation of choice.

· Identify training/learning needs of individuals and develop a learning plan.

· Develop an implementation plan for the learning activities.

· Provide a sample of learning implementation based on your plan.

To do so, you should schedule an appointment with a key stakeholder in the organisation (if you are using scenario 2, your trainer will play that role) and define what are the outcomes expected from the learning.

You then need to assess the current skills, knowledge and attributes levels of the personnel that will be involved in the training compared to the learning outcomes that the organisation aims to achieve. This can be done through a skill analysis.

1. Learning Opportunities

Address all the following:

· Describe how learning outcomes were identified and defined.

· Clearly define learning outcomes as identified by the organisation of choice. You should clearly detail them based on the learning needs of the organisation. Remember that training needs are closely related to strategic and operational goals of an organisation.

· Identify potential formal and informal learning opportunities against each learning outcome.

· (Min. 150 words are required)

2. Individual learning needs

Address all the following:

· Describe how individual learning needs were assessed.

· Identify learning needs of individuals in relation to the needs of the team and/or organisation and available learning opportunities. Note: you can identify learning needs by interviewing line managers and the individual staff members to complete a SKA (Skill, Knowledge, Attribute) analysis for each to identify gaps, level of knowledge and/or preferred learning style. If you are working on scenario 2, use your classmates for a role play, each one of them will play the role of a member of the marketing team at Lonsdale. As a suggestion, you could use a Skill Matrix to record your analysis.

3. Learning plan

Address the following:

· Develop a team learning plan suitable to address the required learning outcomes and to overall address the individual learning needs.

· Develop individual learning plans to address any specific knowledge gap among individual team members that cannot be addressed by a team learning plan.

· Describe how the learning plans reflect the diversity of needs.

· Describe how the learning plan fits with and it is integral to the individual and team performance plans. Hint: consider a performance evaluation plan that can be developed for the individual staff member by the line manager and a team performance plan.

· Describe how effective liaison will occur with training and development specialists (for example an external consultant hired to deliver part of the training) so that learning opportunities are maximised (think for example to effectiveness of learning because the trainer truly understood the needs of the learners and of the organisation).

4. Implementation plan

Develop an implementation plan for the learning opportunities as outlines in your learning plans.

Your implementation plan should include:

· A timetable or calendar of learning activities

· List of resource needed (human and physical resources) for each activity

· Estimated cost of the learning activity

· Any other information/action that would support the implementation of the learning plans

5. Organisational procedures

Address all the following:

· Identify organisational procedures that would maximise individual and team access to, and participation in, learning opportunities.

· Review the procedures and outline if and what improvements can be devised and implemented to ensure that individual and teams acquire better access to, and participation in, learning opportunities. Note: if you don’t have access to read the actual policies and procedures of the organisation, research examples of them on the internet and provide links to the policy and procedures that you have considered for review.

Section 2 – Facilitate and promote learning

In this section, you are required to develop strategies and tools to facilitate and promote learning in the workplace.

1. Promote learning

Develop a detailed strategy to promote learning in the organisation, the strategy must address the following:

· Ensure that workplace learning opportunities are used

· Ensure that team members are encouraged to share their skills and knowledge

· Encourage a learning culture within the team

· Recognise workplace achievement by timely and appropriate recognition, feedback and rewards

(Min. 150 words are required)

2. Policies and procedures

Identify and list policies and procedures that:

a) Support workplace learning opportunities as a contribution to the development of appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes

b) Support team members to assess their own competencies and to identify their own learning and development needs

3. Policy sample 1

Develop a high-level policy (purpose, scope, regulation (if applicable), general principles, high-level procedures) from the list of policy in 2.a

4. Policy sample 2

Develop a high-level policy (purpose, scope, regulation (if applicable), general principles, high-level procedures) from the list of policy in 2.b

5. Scenario

Develop a scenario based on your organisation of choice and the work you have developed so far for this assessment, where you describe an example of how the benefits of learning are shared with others in the team and in the organisation. The example must be relevant to your organisation of choice and your work.

Section 3 – MOnitor and improve learning effectiveness

In this section, you are required to develop strategies and tools to monitor and improve the effectiveness of learning.

1. Additional work-based support

Develop strategies to ensure that team and individual learning performance is monitored to determine the type and extent of any additional work-based support required and any Work Health and Safety (WHS) issues.

2. Improvements to future learning arrangements

Consider the following scenario: The learning planned has been delivered and you have received the following feedback:

· The classroom was too small

· The trainer used too much jargon

· The information was not concise enough

· More practical activities were expected

· Lack of clear instructions when practicing a process

· Too much paper Vs not enough online material

· Trainer was knowledgeable but not engaging enough

a) Use the feedback received to identify improvements and develop a plan to introduce them in future learning arrangements

b) Based on the feedback received, describe how you would make adjustments and negotiate with the training and development specialist for improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of learning

3. Process sample

Develop a process to ensure records and reports of competency are documented and maintained within the organisation’s systems and procedures to inform in future planning.
