UBGMU9-15-2 - Project and Risk Management 2020/2021

Individual Report Brief

Context

For component B, students are asked to present in an individual report their investigation and reflection on the management of a civil engineering project (case study) of their choice. They will articulate their reflection around the themes detailed below.

Students are suggested to work on the same case study as the one presented for component A. However, another project could be chosen provided it had been approved by the Module Team beforehand. The case study can be on a civil engineering project that is completed, ongoing or planned. There are no restrictions in terms of location or scale. However, students need to make sure that they are able to find enough information to build their case study.

Report content

The report should demonstrate your understanding of good project management and health and safety management as appropriate within the context of your chosen project and event.

The report will present the context/background of the chosen project, describe the project, and present student’s critical reflection and thoughts on the management of one particular event/issue of project. The impacts of the event/issue on (1) people, (2) cost, (3) time, (4) health and safety, (5) sustainability, and (6) Ethics will be explored. Using the theory and tools presented in the lectures across the module as well as their own independent research, students should suggest and discuss solutions to (1) overcome the challenges and manage the risks associated with the event/issue, and (2) improve the efficiency, sustainability and ethics of the management of the event/issue.

Appendices and references must be used to demonstrate study that has been undertaken and to provide sources for points made in the body of the report. This will include copies of any individual or group student work undertaken during the module.

The student should refer to the learning materials and readings provided across the module, but are also recommended to give appropriate regard to any additional useful material available online in terms of theory and practice.

Report format

The report should not exceed 2,200 words (2,000 + 10% overlap).

Your work must be professionally presented. Text should be supplemented with appropriate diagrams, images and tables to reinforce the points being made. An indication of how your report should be structured is as follows:

· Title page

· Contents page

· Figure list

· Table list

· Introduction

· Contents

· Conclusion and recommendations

· References list

· Appendices

You should use numbered headers and sub-headers for clarity.

This is an individual report which you must submit individually based on your own analysis and research. Unless specifically noted otherwise, all work should be completed by you personally, with all sources referenced. You should adopt the UWE Harvard approach to citing and referencing the texts and resources you choose to use. Guidance on citing and referencing can be found here.

You should ensure that your ID number appears on all pages including the title page. Text should be kept as succinct as possible; bulleted text will be appropriate in places. The word count should be provided on the title page. Please note the following are excluded from the word count:

· Title page

· Contents page

· Figure list

· Table list

· References list

· Tables (as long as each one includes less than 250 words).

The marking grid is included at the end of this brief.
