Proposal on How Breastfeeding Affects Mother and Child

I intend to investigate how breastfeeding affects both the mother and the child generally. The motivation for this research topic came from article published by World Health Organization on the impacts of Breast Milk substitute marketing on WHO-recommended practices of breastfeeding. According to the article, about 80000 deaths among children are as a result of suboptimal breastfeeding including breast milk substitute marketing. From these sentiments, it seems breastfeeding is the only effective means through which a child development and health can be assured. Thus, I will start my discussion from there by analyzing the positive impacts of breastfeeding on the development and life of the child before examining the various theoretical discourses in the Library to look for other positive and negative impacts of breastfeeding on both the mother and the child.

In this study, I endeavor to answer this general research question:

What are the significant impacts of breastfeeding on the mother and the child? (Both positive and negative impacts) and how is the effects of breastfeeding on mother and child differ from previous periods? Does excessive breastfeeding affects the brain development of a child? Has this been empirically proven to be true? What is the relationship between breastfeeding and obesity? Does it reduce or increase it? Finally, how does excessive breastfeeding leads to gum diseases among mother?

Moreover, I also endeavor to find out the role of policy change in breastfeeding substitute marketing. Particularly, I am interested on how such policy change is likely to encourage breastfeeding among mothers. On the other hand, I am interested in finding out how such policy changes will affect various players such as marketers and producers of breast milk substitutes.
