Nico joined CAF in the spring of 2008 after 14 years of service as a United States Marine Corps Officer. He is a veteran of the Iraq conflict and brings with him over 8 years of fundraising and event experience to benefit challenged military athletes. Nico is dedicated to supporting the rehabilitative needs of our troops and will lead CAF's effort to mentor and provide post-rehabilitation support to American service members who have suffered permanent physical injuries in recent conflicts.
Nico responded in an email that they have plenty of ongoing volunteer opportunities. There is a weekly surf clinic on Thursdays. They also need volunteers to help with organizing a donor database, entering grant data, and researching and writing grants to support their mission. Nico is a fabulous person to work with.
3 Deaf Coffee Night

When: Every Friday night 6pm-9pm (or later)
Just show up with an open and inquisitive nature. your voice turned off (out of respect, do not talk!), and bring pen and paper, white board and markers, a laptop or tablet to type out questions, etc. There is also an ASL (American Sign Language) app that might be helpful to you. At least, have access to the sign language alphabet so you can finger spell. You will find that the Deaf community is very open to people who actually WANT to connect and communicate with them as opposed to exclude and disregard their value within society. You have to be a little bold, find people signing, and join them. Share (write it somewhere) that you are a student who wants to learn ASL and learn about Deaf culture. Stay for 2-3 hours. If you actively participate, you will learn a lot!
4 Walk to End Alzheimer's
Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease!
The event date is 9/21/2019, this will not count as a culture plunge opportunity for this semester but just giving information

5 Banding Together
Our Jam Session program has approximately 20 teens and young adults at each location. Each of the individuals we work with has unique learning, social and sensory challenges. Participants range in age from 13-28 and have a variety of special needs including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, William’s Syndrome and Down Syndrome. The purpose of the group is to provide a once a month music therapy group and mentoring program for 20 youth with special needs through eight one-hour music therapy groups (aka as “jam sessions”) at a local community venue. This program was developed to help teens with special needs, such as autism, learn the dynamics of building friendships, social skills, and self-expression through fresh and creative avenues. Drawing on peers and professionals from the community, this group experiences music recording, instrument exploration, improvisational songwriting, drumming and other projects based on the interests of the group.
