Discussion 2: Protozoan Parasites and Disease

Although many protozoa are free-living, there are a variety of pathogenic protozoa that parasitize animals. (Not all diseases are viral, bacterial, or fungal.)

Initial post:

For the initial post, choose one example of a protozoan parasite and address the following: common and binomial name of parasite, animal hosts for the parasite, disease or condition caused by the parasite, and common methods of transmission for the parasite. Also post a picture (or two) of your animal.

You also need to cite your source(s) with intext citations.  You should have at least one reviewed source.

Replies to posts:

Reply to two posts by other individuals.  Address the following in your reply:

In general, transmission rates and geographic distributions of many (not all) wildlife diseases appear to be increasing.

Explain one possible reason for why this may be true or may not be for the disease discussed in the discussion post.  Also, explain one possible solution or management approach for eliminating or controlling that specific protozoan disease.

This is worth 20 points

Initial post should be about 150-200 words.  Replies, around 100 words.

Initial Post should be done within 2 days of opening, but must be done by Wednesday at 11:59 pm to give time for responses.

Responses and initial post must be on different days for full credit, as well as meeting the above criteria.

Use book and ask for login!

Respond to 2 peers: Cannot post until the initial post goes in!
