Topic: Abortion

In the article “Should Abortion Rights be Protected or Restricted” the Author Lynette

Knapp speaks about a young girl who got pregnant under the legal age. Due to the laws set forth

by the state in which she lived in which was Indianapolis, she could not get an abortion unless

she had written or verbal consent from her parents she was not able to. Due to her options being

limited she had to find alternatives to get an abortion because she did not want the baby. She had

to go to a not so reliable doctor to get one where they would not ask for the consent from her

parents and just 1 month later, she was found dead due to complications from the procedure.

Ultimately, what the author of this article claims and wants her readers to understand is that the

laws set forth on abortion are ridiculous. This young girl could have lived if she did not; by law

need her parents consent to get the procedure done in a safely manner. Ms. Knapp is definitely

pro choice and wants females to be in charge of their own body and decisions at any age and

laws and should not set a line between life and death. I plan to use this in my paper as ethos and

inform parents of the risk they are putting their child in abiding by these laws.

In this second article “Birth Control leads to More Abortions” the Author Peter Baklinski

establishes the idea that yes indeed it has been scientifically proven that the women who use any

form of contraceptive method are more likely to get an abortion. He speaks about how the

meaning of of sexual intercourse has been lost because of these. Now a days, people have

intercourse just to have it and make it seem so easy and with no consequences because there is so

many forms to “prevent” it but in reality how sure are we that these will work? The author uses

Logos to persuade the customer to believe that if we want the number of abortions and females

going through this we should get rid of contraceptives. He also uses morals, such as the catholic

church and how their religion teaches their people that they should wait until after marriage to

have sexual intercourse, being that this would also help the number of abortions worldwide go

down because if a child is conceived, it is conceived into a family that has already established

love and commitment and a ready to have the child. I will use this article in my paper to appeal

to all the religious driven people to educate them on the rights of women and their body.

In the third article “Conscientious objection to referrals for abortion: pragmatic solution

or threat to Women's rights?” the authors write about the ability of nurses and midwives being

able to deny referrals to abortions requested by the woman wanting the procedure. Some

Facilities require that the patient has a referral from someone in the medical field so that they

think twice about their decision and maybe after getting this referral they change their minds.

The main point that the author is trying to get across is that the requirement of referrals gets in

the way of women's rights because the person giving the referral may be making the decisions

based off of morals or religion and that is not fair to the decision being made by the woman

wanting the abortion. At the end of the day who is getting the procedure done? Who is the one

that is going to live and deal with the baby after it is born? Whos body is going to go through the

pain? I want to use this article and its ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade the reader that it is our

body our choice. Baklinski, Peter. "Birth Control Leads to More Abortions." Birth Control,

In the article “Abortion Violates Human Rights” the Author is clearly against abortion.

As you read the title you might think the opposite, that the author supports abortion and the

female body but otherwise, the author voices the fetus. The fetus is now a human being as well

that in 9 months will also be a human being and also has rights as of now. The decisions being

made in the country apply to the fetus now as well and in the future when the child is born it will

also contribute the these decisions. He also appeals to the readers by explaining the hypocrisy

that those people that are pro life have. The author states that they are basically being selfish and

not thinking about the other human being developed and only the one that already committed the

mistake. I will use this article to appeal to the emotions of the readers who are pro life and maybe

make them doubt the idea itself, and if they are really supporting what they label as pro-choice.

In the fifth article “Denying Abortion Victimizes Women Who have been Raped” the

author mentions how women who have been victims of rape should have some sort of exemption

from the laws already set in place by congress.they should not need any type of referral, their

insurance should help and cover majority of the expenses that an abortion costs, and the state of

the court should assist them with facilities that have good care because, initially it was not even

their fault they were victims of abuse. The author also mentions that females should not even

have to go through the process of waiting the 9 months and going through the full process of

maintaining a pregnancy they did not ask for. They should not have to wait to deliver the baby to

make a decision of how they want to move forward. I will use this article to appeal more the

politics side of abortion and the rights that women who have been abused should have.

In my sixth article “The meaning of life: belief and reason in the abortion debate”

Borgmann argues the fact the life begins at the moment of conception. At that very second when

having sexual intrcourse we all know that we run that risk of conceiving so this is exactly when

conception begins. The meaning of life begins right there. She references a lot back to obama

and McCain when they were in congress and how they would respond morally to abortion. They

allowed their people to believe what they thought is correct based on their morals. Most people

base their life changing decisions based off of their morals and their religion. I will use this

article in my paper because i think that i am a little biased by my morals and i will explain why

most of us connect to this type of decision making.

In this article “Some Reasons to decide Against abortion” Terwilliger gives us actual

many reasons teenager decide to either go through with the procedure of abortion or decide to

keep the child. The most common reason that the author states is that these teenagers are scared

to what their parents will say or do. They think they will disown them, or they will kick them out

of their home, their boyfriend does not and is not ready and will not get ready to have the baby

with them, they feel embarrassment for being so dumb and not being preventive. She speaks

about many more reasons why or why not girls go through or not with the procedure and it is

very appealing because this article hits home for most of us and helps us connect very well with

the decision because most of us think the same way and are mostly scared and can't decide what

they best route to take will be. They feel no support coming from anyone when it's most needed.

My seventh source is the website Abortion.procon.org that lists both pros and cons to

abortion. For example, it uses many logos and facts like laws and the amendments that are

actually set in place against and pro abortion. It also talks about the reproductive pros and cons to

abortions, the moral side that applies not only to the mother but also the fetus, the access to legal

and illegal facilities that perform the procedure etc… I plan to use this website to persuade the

reader by using facts and now not opinions on the subject because most of the time we do not

educate ourselves on the facts before making a decision. Educated decisions are the best

decisions to make sometimes. Source: https://abortion.procon.org/

My last source is the book written by Robert P

. Jones and Daniel Cox titled “Religion, Values, & Experiences” this book mainly focuses on

exactly that. The thoughts and decisions we make based upon our religion ideas and past

experiences that we have had and we can relate to. They talk about the connections we make

with those amongst us and how we also base our decisions on them and the history. I chose this

book and plan to use it in my paper by comparing it to the previous article and countering each

other with actual facts and beliefs and how they both connect and help us make the right or

support the side we think is right.
