Lab #3 – Webmaps and Twitter

1. What are some of the factors that might influence the geographic distribution of the tweets you see? A
a. At the world scale?
b. At the scale of the United States?
2. How is this map different than the maps you posted on Packback? Hint: maps can be static or dynamic…
Packback’s map is static, but this one is dynamic. And it shows the amount of Tweets posted in different locations.
3. What do you like about this map?
a. Do you have any critiques of it? What is missing? What would you add?
I like this map that shows the tweets amount and will list the top five countries of posting tweets. And having different layer. The missing part is they do have time filter but missing the area filter. I would like to add in an area filter.
4. If you have a twitter account, make a tweet (Wait a few minutes) and see if you can locate it. Is the map picking up your tweet?
5. Explore Temple University by zooming in to the street scale… What are people tweeting about around Temple? This is what I found.

6. What are the most popular hashtags in the world right now?
This is what I found (on 2/4/19)
Click on (view more analytics) on the left – it will give you the analytics of the area that appears on your screen. Consider the following questions.
In the United States?
Today the most popular hashtag in the United States is Superbowl.
In another country?
In the United Kingdom the most popular hashtag is the same as the United States.
In the town you grew up in?
In the city I grew up do not showing any hashtags.
7. Look for something in a foreign language like the day of the week. What does the geographic distribution like? What does the distribution tell us about language and culture?
I searched a French word, and it shows most of the tweets posted are distributed at Paris. It tell us there are a lot of countries and areas using French, but the most concentrated area is Paris.
8. What is an API? (look it up)
Is the abbreviation of Application Programming Interface.
a set of functions and procedures allowing the creation of applications that access the features or data of an operating system, application, or other service.
9. How is ‘rest API’ being used on the map? Both versions of the map use the same API. Visit here – This is the ‘about,’ section I told you about earlier… PLEASE CLICK ON EACH SUBHEADING WITH A CHECK NEXT TO IT AT THE TOP LEFT SIDE OF THE PAGE FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THE REST API. http://v3.maptimize.com/
Their REST API lets the users create, update and delete a point with instant result on the map. They still support bulk update to initialize user’s map.
10. Pick three key words or hashtags to explore – describe where these tweets are concentrated and take snips of their geographic location. Why do you think they exhibit the geographic pattern you observe?
The hashtag I pick is Super bowl. These tweets are concentrated on Super bowl result. Because this hashtag is similar as the other one I searched. It shows everywhere around the world, but it most concentrated at North America.
Because today is the Chinese New Year, so I picked another key word is new year. But there are just few tweets posted at the Asian area and is not at China. I think the reason of there is no tweets posted at China, is because China are not allowed the people to access the foreign website.
Third one I picked is travel, this key word is most posted at North America. I guess this because America have the largest amount of Tweeter users around the world.
11. Pick 2 geographic areas. (For example Cleveland and West Hollywood) What are the most popular tweets in these areas? Zoom into the city and use the analytics function…
The first area I pick is Kansas, the most popular hashtag is Super Bowl.
Second area I pick is London. The most popular hashtag in here is London.
