Being Forewarned

Many of the common mistakes made by new administrators resonate with me, however I have opted to select those that impact my entire life. The common mistakes I believe I should focus on as a new administrator intern include not practicing effective internal communication and lacking balance in my life. Both of these common mistakes impact my personal life much more than my professional life.

The reasoning behind selecting not practicing effective internal communication relates to last weeks discussion post. Knowing the importance of internal communication is crucial as a teacher leader in the school. For certain reasons, I am not advertising that I am an administrative intern. Therefore, most of my communication revolves around my 7th Grade Team Leader duties. However, I am receiving more duties and roles in the school. I am not blatantly communicating my internship to fellow teachers because I am not someone who sees myself in a position above my coworkers. I see them as equals and try to rule in a democratic manner during grade level meetings. However, with my increase in duties and roles in the school, I am afraid people will begin to speculate about my role in the school. If people ask me about my internship, I will be honest with them but I am not advertising my internship.

I believe many of us will find difficulty balances in our personal lives and our internship. 100 hours of anything within an eight week time frame will interfere with someone’s personal life. Most of us are probably on the same page in showing dedication to the administrator position. We want to do the best job as possible to try to land an administration job or prove to others we would make competent administrators. When I do something, I do it full speed. Therefore, my personal life time will get cut into as the internship progresses. Luckily, the program has previously consumed a large amount of time, however this type of time consumption is different rather than writing papers. To improve my balance of life, I will just need to communicate with both my administrators and my family in what is going on. I have provided my administrator with a weekly calendar of what days after school work well for me, and what time I need to leave by. In doing so I can begin to balance my life and the internship.
