Discipline Hierarchy in the Secondary Environment: Reducing the Number of Office Referrals

*

GOAL: Reduce Office Referrals: Increase in Hallway presence

Discuss “assertive discipline” in a hierachy

Increasing consequence with each misbehavior

Ex. Ist offense cursing etc..

Use “Assertive Responses”
with a
Discipline Hierarchy

Key to Success:

  • Misbehavior followed by immediate consequence
  • Verbal and Visual

*

-Tell about my QUALITATIVE research

-OG Middle, no detentions

Just like “students have different learning styles”

“they understand and respond to disciplen in different methods as well !!!

Assertive Responses

  • “You have decided to interrupt me.”
  • “Because of your actions, you have chosen to receive 30 min of detention.”
  • “It is your actions that directed me to send you to the office.”
  • “You’ve made the decision for me.”

*

Say, “not gonna give you book definition”

Stress” put all the emphasis on the students’ actions”

Teacher Disposition

  • Maintain calm demeanor (even if you are boiling inside).
  • Try not to allow a student to see you upset
  • Keep voice at low pitch and volume.
  • Even if you are angry, maintain the stance that nothing the student can say or do will EVER affect you!
  • Discuss, but do not argue with the student.

*

“on phone teachers sound real upset”

3. This doesn’t mean not to be firm

5. “how do you discuss?’ assertive responses

Positive Reinforcement

  • Verbal praise
  • Group rewards
  • Ripple Effect

*

Go over Ripple by saying, “ praise a student next to someone who misbehaves”

Model example with teacher---

Protect instructional time

*

Say” MAIN REASON OR GOAL for this”
