Learning Topic
Basic Networking Concepts Computer networking is what allows communications between systems. To make this
happen, several components must work together, from networking hardware to network
protocols. Computer networking is critical in cloud computing, and it is important to have
a good foundation and general understanding of networking concepts separately and how
they work together.

Network Overview
This resource provides an
overview: http://intronetworks.cs.luc.edu/current/html/intro.html
(http://intronetworks.cs.luc.edu/current/html/intro.html)
Special attention and consideration should be given to the following concepts
because they will ensure success in the cloud computing field.
Layers: This section explains how layers separate roles between the protocols
and services in networking.
Packets: This section provides a foundation on how network data is
transmitted on the network.
Topology: This section explains topology, which is one of the fundamental
concepts on how a network is configured.
LANs and Ethernet: This section explains a how local area network is
configured.
Internet Protocol: This section discusses IP, which serves an important role
within the cloud computing infrastructure and will be apparent in many
functions. This section also provides an overview of IP addressing and other
aspects of the protocol.
DNS: This section introduces the domain name system, which allows the use
of text in place of a numerical IP address that is usually hard to remember.
Firewalls: This section discusses this service or appliance, which protects a
network from attacks.
