Subject: Automation of Curricular Material Evaluation

We are investigating the feasibility of developing a software algorithm that would evaluate the quality of curricular materials developed for online courses. We hope that your work will help us take a step toward our long-term goal of replacing our human curriculum designers with a software system that can evaluate what materials will provide the best retention of information.

We have conducted an experiment in which we measured the retention of information conveyed using different teaching methods. In our experiment, three groups of fifteen students were taught a course topic using one of three different PowerPoint lectures. They were then quizzed on how well they retained the information. The results of these tests are shown in Table 1. The PowerPoint lectures used in this experiment will be made available with this memo.

Your goal in this work is to determine how attributes of the presentations affect student retention of information.

The deliverable for this work is a report documenting your analysis of this experiment; each member of your team should write their own report. Your Analysis Report should include the following:

1. Your report should describe the different attributes of the presentations you have identified. Your description of the attributes should be complete with enough detail that someone not familiar with your work could read your report and identify these attributes in other presentations.

2. Your report should document how the presentation attributes affect student retention of information. You should make one or more arguments about this, each with a claim and supporting reasons and evidence.

3. Your report should document any concerns your have about the project and identify infor- mation needed to allow you to improve your understanding of how these attributes affect retention of material.

This report is due on November 7.

In addition to your Analysis Report, you will be required to submit two Progress Reports. These reports will document your project plan for completing the analysis and creating your report, the tasks you have completed, and the tasks that are still remaining. Your project plan should include at least five tasks and should be documented in a Gantt chart. This Gantt chart will be submitted as part of each progress report. The first progress report is due on October 26, and the second is due on November 2.

After you have submitted your analysis report, we will provide you with some additional information and ask you to compare and contrast your analysis with that of several other teams.
