Role of Parents Training in the Care and Treatment of Individuals with ASD
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a threatening condition affecting people of all ages starting from children to adults. Most victims affected experience social challenges since they experience communication difficulties making it impossible to associate with others in the surrounding environment positively. Despite of this, less variety of efforts have been made to educate parents on how to live with individuals with this alarming disorder and make them fit for future roles (Rohacek et al., 2022). This is due to many barriers ranging from the physical, emotional, and financial crisis in the various countries' setups “Although the evidence of parent training programs for families of autistic children has continued to grow, little is known about the experiences and perceptions of key stakeholders, especially in low- and middle-income countries (Fang et al., 2022).” Only well-developed countries can manage these individuals, making it a global threat. Since this is an emerging issue, it should be responded to immediately by taking the most appropriate steps which are aimed at helping the affected victims. The training makes parenting exercise easy throughout the entire life.
The parents learn about their individuals and their needs and develop better responses needed. Having a personal relationship with the individuals determines the mode of response to various actions. In case of conflicts, they can determine the most appropriate step to take by examining all the consequences. According to the study done by Fang and his friends, a qualitative methodology was utilized where a quasi-experimental analysis of various parent programs was utilized. A group of participants were selected from the community and various methods were used to gather information. After the data analysis process, it was concluded that individuals with ASD can adjust their lives with time by observing what their parents do. This is a lifelong learning process that involves observing and imitating. Continuous practice makes them master the skill and get used to the normal daily routines surrounding them. Parents are the main providers and have the full responsibility of caring for these autistic patients without ignoring their roles. In the existing society, some parents have ignored their duties and left their children suffering since they cannot rely on any other people for survival. Additionally, the parent's mental health determines the individual's state of mind and actions. Stress and depression are likely to result due to challenges raising these individuals leading to associated disorders. They should therefore lead a better life by avoiding the stressful causes which are dangerous and harmful to their health. Caregivers who develop such states need guidance and counseling sessions that will change their mindsets and stable mental conditions. Groups were created and discussions were conducted on the most appropriate strategies to adopt to live with ASD individuals.
Unique attributes and levels of individual behavior were examined to determine the suitable approaches to apply. The importance of training leads to reduced challenges faced by the individuals, hence increasing the level of knowledge concerning this condition. It equips them with important information on how to conduct some critical procedures. Further, it leads to a change in attitudes of the parents towards the individuals who are suffering from autism disorder. Developing a positive attitude is key since they become motivated and see individuals as useful members of society and not burden creators. Additionally, it increases social support from all the stakeholders involved in the different social institutions. Research indicates that the approaches were applicable especially in China since most children are autistic and have a parent who is a caretaker. From the statistics made, most parents with ASD individuals must take the sole responsibility and not leave it fully to the house managers. They have organized community programs that educate individuals on ASD victims' challenges. Contributions in the form of financial aid and resources have led to easy facilitation of the programs. The training attracts the support from other non-governmental organizations which cater to individuals with disabilities in society. For instance, charity groups may volunteer to educate ASD individuals due to their inability to perform their normal duties. Further, after examining the needs of the community, they can start building learning facilities that can accommodate their needs and offer effective education.
Training Programs for Parents
Parents of individuals with ASD disabilities in local environments have faced a variety of challenges while raising them. This study conducted indicated that the problems experienced originated from insufficient healthcare facilities. Most babies born with this disorder fail to attend a prenatal clinic due to long distances between their places of residence and hospitals. This leads to a challenge in the growth process since there is no close monitoring of the child's health. A telehealth-based parent program was successful since they were included in the services involving treating individuals with ASD. A manual was printed where parents organized into groups were trained on important survival skills. Statistics collected implied an increase in knowledge and skill acquired after the exercise. A positive response was also realized when most parents volunteered to attend the training sessions and were eager to learn new attributes of parenthood. Some of the other additional programs included the Online and Applied System for Intervention Skills (Boydston et al., 2022). Different interactions were recorded for each parent and their children at an interval of once a week for 18 weeks. During the assessment period, the mode of conduct and acquired skills were observed critically.
The importance of having a personal understanding of the unique needs of the victims has been emphasized since it creates a pathway for better living (Li et al., 2022). Educating the parents creates a close relationship between the two parties in a manner that they can reveal their inner needs and desires. A deeper examining methodology has been adopted involving a variety of approaches (Frye et al., 2022). Meetings have been organized in various institutions like churches and schools where the parents and other community members have been impacted knowledge physically. Further, an interview methodology has been used where those parents with experience with ASD individuals have been summoned. It was further suggested that the role of parents during the early stages of development is critical to the individuals. Caregivers should observe their children critically to notice any unique attributes that they might develop (Buch et al., 2023). In case something unusual is noticed, the parents must report to the nearest health center for further medical advice.
Hygiene Measures
Body hygiene is important in individuals with ASD since it affects them directly. This is important since it prevents emerging diseases associated with unhygienic practices which interfere with normal body functioning. Individuals with ASD may fail to observe cleanliness due to the inability to bath well “Hygiene intervention also reduced the severity of child behavior problems interfering with home oral hygiene (Fang et al., 2022)”. This further reduces the risks of developing other dangerous diseases associated with unhygienic conditions. The parents should train the individuals on basic hygiene practices for survival and independence as they grow (Bitan et al., 2022). Basic skills like making the bed, cleaning the house, and utensils must be trained for ASD individuals. This contributes to high levels of responsibility so that they can do some basic tasks on their own. Alternatively, hygiene involves proper grooming and washing of hands regularly. They should be dressed in a presentable manner so that their social interaction with others will be free and enjoyable. It has been reported that most individuals who are suffering from ASD fail to secure jobs and other opportunities due to poor interaction skills. The inability to self-expression denies them the ability to present their needs.
Delivery Methods Used
In the process of handling individuals with ASD disorders, various treatment procedures have been selected and realized to be effective. Some of the commonly adopted methods include developmental, behavioral, and social-relational. The behavioral methodology explains the impact of environmental conditions on the influence behavior of ASD patients. In the early developmental stages, babies tend to emulate the sounds in the environment and learn from them. Sounds influence their speech development and ability to express themselves to other human beings without fear. They can also copy what other individuals and caregivers are doing and adopt the positive attributes. From the experiences gained, they develop various characters which shape their view of life. This influences their communication and language skills developed. As a result, there is improved academic attainments and adoption of acceptable behaviors in the community. Various stimulations in the environment determine the response they develop. The developmental methodologies on the other hand examine existing gaps in skill acquired. In this scenario, language and speech therapies are used to accomplish the talking stage. Using technological advances like iPads and pictures has been emphasized in the current generation. Learners tend to capture information in pictorial form and can easily recall it. It saves time, is friendly to learners, and is an interesting mode of teaching. Additional delivery methods such as feedback after practice, group, and individual help, and modeling have been used (Fang et al., 2022). Practice is accompanied by observing the way the caregivers treat individuals with autism and giving feedback on their accomplishments.
Modeling practice involved the shore case of acquired skills through practice which led to trust building for a better understanding of the caregiver's unique needs. These groups created by parents led to social involvement and a sense of belonging leading to more acceptance of individuals with ASD by their parents. Providing a healthy diet to individuals and exercising regularly are some of the most appropriate and effective practices (Curtis, 2022). It leads to proper brain development and easy mastery of content learned in school. Demonstrations aimed at displaying the already acquired skills and attitude to the general public for their importance. Methods such as posters and billboards were mostly used for easy passage of information. Great support from other family members was also adopted for the individuals to experience love and care.
Community Involvement
In the current society, it is the collective responsibility of all the community members to care for individuals with ASD. This will prevent the isolation experienced by the public due to their existing condition since they cannot be able to communicate and interact effectively with others. The growth process should be a collective responsibility of all people despite their status (Lipinski et al., 2022). While in school, the teachers should handle them effectively by examining their gaps and appropriate responses. They can be encouraged to work hard in school since despite their weaknesses, they may possess unique abilities which may earn them a source of living. Additionally, other community organizations like churches should also organize programs that suit their needs and unique differences (Chan et al., 2023). Resources in various learning institutions must be equipped to allow them to stay in school. Further, guidance and counseling sessions must be practiced randomly where they are guided on how to approach various issues faced in life (Ghanouni and Quirke, 2023). Educational trips organized by the various school administrations create opportunities for them to interact with other learners. Through this, they will gain confidence and develop proper communication skills. Cases of discrimination in society should be punished by the relevant individuals. While seeking admission to schools, equal chances to participate in various events should be available to promote equity and order (Pellicano et al., 2022). Learners with disabilities should have their schools and teachers who have been trained on how to handle them adequately.
During the research process, most of the participants were chosen from the community members to aid in the process of data collection. Some had information from previous parenthood and had the required data. Others were selected as a control experiment for comparison of analyzed data. Individuals who had learners with ASD were found to be vulnerable and needed support for survival. In addition to the suggested support from the community, government involvement as part of the community involvement was adopted. It offered support needed like finances and provision of required resources to the various learning institutions. The teaching and learning materials provided created an effective learning process and contributed to the achievement of the set goals and objectives. Their role in employing teachers to teach the learners was important for them to be equipped with knowledge and skills.
Challenges Faced in the Process of Training
Efforts have been made in the community to train parents on how to care for individuals with ASD. This ensures they are well equipped with the knowledge needed while monitoring their children in the various developmental stages. Inadequate finances have been a major challenge to parents coming from low-income families (Fenning et al., 2022). Failure to secure a stable job for continuous income benefits has led to the increased problems faced by ASD parents. This has made it difficult the satisfaction of the daily needs and wants like food, clothing, and shelter. These individuals are delicate and have many issues which need to be attended to, failure to do it makes life difficult. Therefore, poor parents sometimes lack the support needed, making them have low self-esteem. In extreme cases, some have committed suicide due to life pressures that deny them chances to practice fair living. Additionally, discrimination cases have increased where the affected families are isolated from others (McCrossin et al, 2023). Their participation in various community events has been reduced due to their inability to meet the set standards and requirements. Claims that they cannot offer any support in the set developmental projects have contributed to their limited participation in them. These parents cannot be able to provide common requirements for them to satisfy their needs(Drüsedau et al, 2023). There have been increased cases of discrimination in job opportunities in autism individuals (Jonkman et al., 2022). In some companies where technology is highly applied, individuals with autism disorders have been preferred since they possess unique abilities required in the recent century for increased production. In the government set up, these individuals have been denied equal opportunities to participate in leadership. Claims of their disabilities indicate that they cannot be favorable leaders. Representatives have been ignored, making it difficult for them to present their needs for help. Further, in the budget allocation, these individuals have experienced inadequate money making them struggle to meet their daily needs.
Conclusion
An examination of existing literature implies increased efforts toward individuals with autism disorders. However, most implementations have been passed to fight for the rights but have failed in most setups. The existing parent training programs are aimed at impacting applicable skills on how to handle the victims for them to lead successful lives. As a follow-up method of interviewing parents used in the research by Fung and his friends, changes were noticed in the parents who had gone for the training. The relationship with existing family members and friends had improved greatly. Additionally, the mental well-being of various caregivers had changed since they had been equipped with stress management methodologies. In the long run, an improved moral state and emotional support from friends and peers were noticed. Parents with ASD individuals changed their perspective and accepted them despite their condition. After the intervention approaches, many parents who had undergone training demonstrated a positive response to the sessions.
PARENT TRAINING IN THE TREATMENT OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISEASE 1
Other community members have also been educated on how to live with individuals suffering from autism without any discrimination. Feedback in the various research methodology and practice programs implies a positive change in individuals with autism. After creating awareness, most people have changed their perspective toward ASD individuals. In various workplaces, they have been recognized as potential and productive members who have equal opportunities to work. In schools, specialized facilities have been built to facilitate an easy learning environment. The government on the other hand has made efforts to offer financial support to the public and building facilities that will be utilized in the process. A better future research calls the need for better recommendations and approaches. Participants should be used from various countries due to determine the effect of ethnicity on ASD individuals. Additionally, an examination of other factors like economic, political, and financial barriers must be made a priority. Political leaders should also be involved since their support is critical. They can easily implement projects such as community developments since they are the main budgeters of the money allocated. An examination of the different living environments determines was critical in examining the unique gaps existing. Alternatively, an experimental approach should be adopted to make the research findings more relevant. In this setup, the relevancy of the data collected must be emphasized. A follow-up program is critical to ensure the adopted changes are used. It involves a visit to the parents with children suffering from autism and interviewing their implementation of skills gained. Rewards to those parents who have improved in their performance enhance their morale. Face-to-face interviews can also be adopted for efficiency. In this context, critical questions can be asked to weigh the level of achievements realized and areas without improvement
