Your Drinking Water

The purpose of this part of the activity is to learn about the water you drink.

The public utility company, or department, which provides your drinking water is required by the EPA to inform its consumers about the health and safety of the water they supply. This information can be found in the utility’s annual “water quality report”. Go to the website for your water supplier and find their most recent water quality report. Use that report to answer these questions. You can use your home residence or MSU. The water in Morehead is supplied by Morehead Utility Plant Board.

2. From what body of water is your drinking water drawn? High Rock Lake

3A. Name two regulated contaminants that were tested for. Bacterial testing and nitrite/nitrate testing

3B. What are the likely sources for these contaminants? Likely sources are foodborne disease and waste products which might be present in the water body. For the case of nitrate, we have fertilizers and other natural conditions which leads to leaching of soil.

4. Name two secondary contaminants the utility chose to test for. Chose to test bleach and toxins which are produced by bacteria or soil bleaching.

5. Were any of the secondary contaminants above the maximum allowable level? Yes they were like the toxins which are produced by bacteria.

6. Were there any water quality violations? If so, what was the contaminant(s)? There was no quality water violation as the system focus on provision of high quality water which is essential for all of customers.

9. The Clean Water Act requires that impaired (contaminated) streams be restored. These streams are designated with TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load). This indicates that a plan has been developed to control the amount of pollutants the stream can receive from point and nonpoint sources, while still meeting water quality standards. Are there any such streams in your county? If so, how many are there? Yes they are four.
