Identification of unknown bacteria
The lab experiment resulted in Staphylococcus Epidermidis as the unknown bacteria, and I used gram staining to identify the type of bacteria, which turned out to be positive.
Methodology
Visualization of the bacteria was done by gram staining as a preferred method. Bacteria tend to react differently according to their type when using this method in their cell wall composition. In this case, they are identified in two types; gram-positive and negative. The gram-positive result to crystal violet-iodine complexes when a specific reagent is added to it such stains of crystal violet. On the other hand, gram-negative decolorizes upon the addition of such reagents, and it regains color after adding safranin. The two types of bacteria can be identified through the staining process by their color appearance; purple for gram-positive and pink or red for gram-negative.
Materials Used
The lab experiment used three different media to detect bacteria present such as supportive, differential, and selective. The media shows the presence of exoenzymes that support the growth of bacteria. In addition to this, different nutrients were used to investigate the exoenzyme, such as skim milk agar and Simons Citrate agar. On the other hand, the biochemical test used oxidase to determine protein transportation by electrons. In this case, bacteria react differently to such a test, whereas the enzyme catalase is observed using the catalase test. On the other hand, a urease test must be conducted for a bacteria to contain the urease enzyme. The above test shows or explains what bacteria provide, or it can break down oxygen metabolites.
Results and Discussion
The results of the lab experiment for the unknown bacteria is Staphylococcus epidermis. The experiment followed all the procedures from gram staining to identify the type of bacteria, and it came out as gram-positive. When reflecting Oxidase test, the result was negative; it did not turn out to be purple. Also, the carbohydrate tubes did not show any color, and the was no bubble present due to lack of gas. On the other hand, I based on differential and selective media, and it turned out to be negative due to the presence of green color. The agar used on this was Simmons Citrate.
