Assignment 1:

Read McFadden’s (2011) chapter on reading legal citations and then find 29 CFR § 1910.120 (q)(3).  In a short essay between 600 words explain:

  • Give your thoughts on whether you believe this statute should apply to the health problems of New York police and firefighters allegedly caused during their response to the September 11, 2001 attacks (CNN, 2013).

  The Origins of Security and Today’s Security Role

  Discuss the extent of security’s growth in this country. What are some of the reasons for the professionalization of the field of private security? What types of businesses are using more security than they did 10-20 years ago? What types are using less? Why the changes?

2. What are the greatest challenges facing private security in the 21st Century? How have they evolved in recent decades, and what is driving the challenges?

3. Discuss the basic services typically performed by contractual security personnel.

4. Case Study:

Ms. Smith is the newly hired Director of Security for ABC Corporation. Prior to her arrival, ABC Corporation management underwent a reorganization to help reduce costs during a down-turn in business. All organizations were expected to find ways to continue to deliver quality services and support while reducing their cost. The security department was not exempted from this requirement.

ABC Corporation uses a proprietary security force to deliver all security services and perform all security task. All security officers, security professionals and even fire and safety personnel are employees of ABC Corporation. In total, ABC Corporation has 70 proprietary employees delivering security and safety services. The security operation is a 24/7 operation and employs limited use of access control technologies and surveillance systems. The reliance is heavy on the "human element."

Furthermore, upon arrival, Ms. Smith learned that her predecessor did not have a working relationship with the local Law Enforcement community nor the local Fire Department. This has caused a condition where support from the local police department is nearly non-existent.

How would you:

Traffic Law and Accident Investigations

PART 1: Write a 1000 word essay addressing the following questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. There should be a separate section for each of the questions; separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper. Support your ideas with at least three (3) sources in your essay. Make sure to reference the citations using the APA writing style for the essay. The cover page and reference page do not count toward the minimum word count.

1. Why is collecting vehicle crash data important? What are some of the methods of data collection? What are some of the sources of the data? Where do you see crash data used? Discuss common problems of crash data.

2. Explore your state laws regarding the requirements to obtaining a motor vehicle operator’s license, and to register a personal passenger motor vehicle. Report on your findings and then compare them to another state. Discuss which state is more restrictive.

3. Discuss how the implementation of graduated driver’s licenses has directly affected the number of deaths resulting from traffic crashes involving teen drivers.

PART 2: Authentic Performance Task:

As the Director of Traffic Safety for your state, you have been asked to prepare a memo for the Commissioner of Transportation outlining the recent traffic crash trends and recommending how to reduce crash fatalities in your state. Your memo should be at least 250 words and at a minimum, include recent trends and make data-based recommendations. Base your response on the information in NHTSA publications 812456 and 812392 and at least one additional scholarly source.
