ASSIGNMENT TWO

Chapter 5

Crime and Violence

Tom, a poor 24-year old, high school dropout, is from a rough part of town where crime and violence go hand in hand. He’s never had a stable family environment because his father was arrested for selling drugs when he was 5 years old, and has been in and out of prison his whole life. His mother was addicted to pain killers, but is currently trying to get her life back on track. There aren’t a lot of opportunities to escape the misery that surrounds him and Tom at times feels hopeless. His neighborhood school is severely underfunded and understaffed and has one of the area’s highest dropout rates. To escape these difficulties, Tom smokes weed with his friends and occasionally engages in various property crimes.

In a paragraph, use one of the following theories [Conflict approaches, Anomie theory or Interactionist approaches] and provide two reasons why Tom will most likely end up in jail. From the same theory, and in another paragraph, propose at least two solutions that you would implement to help Tom avoid prison.
