PLANNING (BIG PICTURE PLANNING)
ASSIGNMENTS Content CHAPTER 4 - PLANNING (BIG PICTURE PLANNING)
You are a youth worker for a non-profit community-based program that runs an after-school
program in a local high school in an urban area in NYC. The school guidance counselor
would like you and your co-worker/co-leader to design a group for young women and men
ages 15 - 18 who are currently sexually active and/or considering becoming sexually active
in the next few months.
What category of group do you think would be appropriate? (Choose from the categories in Chapter 1) Why did you choose that category? After you have chosen the category of group - what is the purpose of the group?
Refer to Jacobs. Schimmel, Masson, and Harvill's 15 Therapeutic Forces to answer the following:
a) how many young people will be in the group (SIZE)
b) what days of the week/time will the group be held? (FREQUENCY OF MEETINGS)
c) how long will each session be? (LENGTH OF EACH SESSION)
d) will it be a closed or open group?
3. For each of the above give me the rationale for why you chose it? (For example, if you
chose Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, tell me why you chose those days and times?
4. Big Picture Planning: You will have 10 sessions with the group. Make a list of 10 topics
you will cover with the group. Give me your rationale for choosing those topics.
Group categories - Education, Discussion, Task, Growth, Experiential, Counseling and Therapy,
Support, Self-Help.
