Assignment 1

Please be sure to fully answer each of these questions in complete sentences.  Please note that in answering these questions you are showing me that you not only read the text, but that you understood it.  Consequently, your answers should be comprehensive and detailed. 

 

1. Explain what is meant by the sociological imagination. Using your sociological imagination, discuss how your social class, family and the larger society have affected your decision to attend college.  

2. What is a social problem?  Provide an example of a current social problem and why you think it is a social problem.  Research to find how many people are being affected by it.  For instance, if your social problem is poverty in the US, research and find out the amount of people who are currently living in poverty in this country.  Be sure to cite your source and use credible sources of information.    

3. In a paragraph, summarize the functionalist perspective and the main reason it gives for the existence of social problems.  Be sure to also summarize the social disorganization theory, which is part of the functionalist. 

4. In a paragraph, summarize the conflict perspective and the main reason it gives for the existence of social problems.   

5. In a paragraph, summarize the symbolic interactionist perspective and the main reason it gives for the existence of social problems.  Summarize the differences between the labeling theory and the social constructionist approach.   

Assignment 2

Sociological Perspectives

In a minimum of a page, choose one sociological perspective (functionalism, conflict, or symbolic interactionism) and discuss the reasons why a person would use illegal drugs in this country. Be sure to propose at least two solutions to lessening the use of illegal drugs in this country based on your chosen perspective.
