Problem Set 4

Problem 1 (8 points). The cities of Springfield and Shelbyville both have softball teams. Problem 2 (7 points). Suppose hypothetical two police departments are comparing the average age of their squad cars.
The players on these two teams care more about scoring runs than they do about actually winning the games (they don’t really play any defense). Each police department randomly selects a sample of 15 squad cars and notes the age of each vehicle.
Statistically speaking, did one team score significantly more runs than the other? Can we say with 95% confidence that Burlington has an older set of squad cars than Manchester?
Note that Shelbyville played more games because two of Springfield’s games were cancelled because of rain.
