Context and the Challenge
You will set your paper in one of the contexts/challenges below:
1) Use the current COVID-19 and/or the rise in the use of technology for communications (or combine as they are intimately linked) and discuss its/their impact on your school or organization. What are the challenges and potentials? Using Morgan’s technique of description of systems/organizations through a metaphor, develop your own metaphor to illustrate what this impact looks like and how it is being responded to. Pictures and diagrams may be included to support your argument.
2) Position your paper within current social, cultural or political context (or combine). This can include the rise of populism, religious fundamentalism, persistent patriarchy, neo-liberalism, decolonisation (anti-colonial), anti-racism, and so forth (or a combination of these). How is this (re)shaping your school or organisation? What are the challenges and potentials? Again, using Morgan’s technique of description of systems/organizations through a metaphor, develop your own metaphor to illustrate what this impact looks like and how it is being responded to. Pictures and diagrams may be included to support your argument.
1) Begin your paper with an introduction that explains briefly what you will do in the paper
2) Situate us by describing the context and also your organisation. What are the challenges and potential of this context for your organisation?
3) Outline your metaphor and why it was chosen. What are its key elements? How is it related to the context?
4) Bring in other scholars who speak to your context and ‘the elements’ of your metaphor. Use ideas that help us to understand better both the context and your metaphor.
(For example, an obvious challenge that comes to mind today is ‘technical rationality’ - the imposition of a technological fix; reduction to everything as remedied by technology on one hand and the important things made possible due to technology. A number of scholars focus on this concept)
5) Outline possible strengths and weaknesses of your metaphor within the organization.
6) Speak to the type of leadership needed to guide your organisation through the ‘challenge/context’ you outlined in the beginning. What role are you or do you want to play?
