Question One
1.5 Marks
Learning Outcome(s): LO1
Explain the origin and evolution of modern multimedia.
Explain the three main advantages of Thunderbolt over other interfaces such as USB.
Answer:
First, Thunderbolt combines the transfer of both computer data, from devices such as hard drives, and display data for additional monitors or projectors. This simplifies the interface by eliminating the need for a separate video port.
Second, Thunderbolt improves transfer speeds. It delivers simultaneous data and display transfer on a single bidirectional cable at speeds of 10 Gbps, making it the fastest entry into computer interface design.
Finally, Thunderbolt increases the power available to peripheral devices to 10 watts compared to USB 3.0’s 4.5 watts. Table 3.2 summarizes transmission rates for the various standards.
Question Two
2 Marks
Learning Outcome(s): LO2
Analyze the key components of multimedia technologies.
Explain the four major developments on DVDs that enable them to store more data than CDs?
Answer:
a more precise laser light, multilayer storage, new video compression algorithms, and improved error detection and correction code
Optical storage that uses: (DVD FEATURS)
· More precise laser light
.40 microns wide vs .83 microns on CD عرض البت
Smaller pits = more data capacity.
· Multi-layer storage
Two reflective layers per side
Each layer stores 4.7GB data
· New video compression methods
MPEG2 compression. Compresses video at 40:1 ratio without compromising video quality.
· Improved error detection and correction.
· CDs use 33% storage for ECC/EDC (error detection and correction).
· DVDs reduce this to 13% of the storage
Question Three
1.5 Marks
Learning Outcome(s): LO2
Analyze the key components of multimedia technologies.
What is the purpose of authoring applications? Which metaphor is used in these authoring programs: PowerPoint, Adobe Director, Authorware?
Answer:
Authoring applications are programs specifically designed to facilitate the creation of multimedia products. They are used to assemble media elements, synchronize content, design the user interface, and provide user interactivity
PowerPoint: card-based
Adobe Director: timeline
Authorware:icon
