It is never too late to start exercising because exercise is necessary to improve the quality life for the elderly. Before the 72-year-old man starts exercising, it would be necessary to visit a physician for a health check-up to identify any complications he might have that need to be monitored when exercising. After the check-up, I will encourage him to exercise to boost his emotional health, reduce boredom, and be physically healthy. Regular senior work-out is important as it helps to prevent diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, certain forms of cancer, and arthritis pain by improving flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance to live longer and healthier (Bouaziz et al., 2016).

For a senior who has had a sedentary lifestyle, low-intensity exercises will be preferable to avoid injury. However, the effectiveness of physical exercise in the improvement of overall health is attributed to moderate to high intensity exercises. I will suggest doing flexibility exercises three days per week for 10 minutes each day to improve mobility, reduce muscle weakness, and improve muscle coordination and posture. The second exercise that I will suggest are aerobics such as jogging, walking, biking, and swimming for 30 minutes, at least five days a week, which would be essential in lowering blood pressure, and help in controlling weight (Bullo et al., 2018). Third, balance exercises for 15 minutes each day, at least five days per week, where controlled movements are required to reduce the risk of injury. Lastly, strength training, four days a week, 15 minutes each day to help retain personal independence.

First, I would acknowledge that he realizes that he needs to change his routine in order to live longer because that it good that he is taking the first step with that. Secondly, I would tell him that it is not too late to start to change his lifestyle, so that would give him positive motivation. The client has lived a sedentary lifestyle which means he is not use to exercising and now that he is older that is a factor as well, so it is important that he knows that he can exercise just at a slower pace until he gets in the habit of exercising. It is important I let the patient know that he is not in a race against anyone but himself. It is important to asses if he has any barriers to exercising and if assistive devices are needed when he exercise. I would educate the patient on the benefits of exercising and why it is important that we include this in our day-to-day living. Exercise has many benefits such as preventing bone loss and joint stiffness (Meiner & Yeager, 2019). The patient is 72 years old and at the age there is a risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders, so it is important to assess the patient before he begins exercising. Utilizing the Exercise Assessment and Screening for You tool can determine if it's safe for the patient to start exercising, as well as recommend programs that are appropriate for him (Meiner & Yeager, 2019). The patient can also join various exercising groups which can motivate him when you have people working towards a common goal. The patient should remember that if he need to take breaks between exercising then he should do so and not overextend himself.
