David Simon, Director of "The Wire" stated in the video "The House I Live In" that the war against drugs has been the problem, not the drugs itself.  He is emphasizing the intense controversy around the implementation of laws and policies to tackle the drug problem in America. One such example of the war on drugs has been mandatory minimum sentencing.  What is mandatory minimum sentencing?  What are at least five effects of mandatory minimum sentencing on communities across America?  Why did we originally switch to this model to counteract the drug epidemic?
