Abstract

This paper will explain, define and defend the human relations competency within the field of contract management. It will discuss the importance of ethical behavior, the need for proper communication skills, and the responsibility to serve as an effective link between multiple parties. This paper will also explore current research and resources into human relations competency and articulate why it is a crucial component of contract management.

Introduction

Contract management is becoming increasingly important in the public and private sectors. It is a comprehensive, integrated management process that ensures that contracts are correctly managed from formation until completion (NCMA, 2013). The human relations component is a core competency for effective contract management—it involves understanding the organization's culture, honing communication skills, and fostering mutually beneficial relationships.

The National Contract Management Association (NCMA) defines contract management as "the processes and procedures that ensure that contracts are properly formed, managed, and administered throughout the lifecycle of the contract" (NCMA, 2013). Contract management requires a distinct set of skills and knowledge that must be acquired. Human relations is one of the core competencies needed for successful contract management.
