Individual Reflection Paper

This assignment asks you to take a fresh, analytic look at a specific work-related experience you have had. It should draw on theories and concepts that you learned in this course. It is officially due Week 4. Your paper should not exceed 4 pages.

Your choice of the situation is a crucial component of your success in this assignment. Consider two aspects when making your choice. First, make sure that the situation has a “hook”, i.e., a problem, a lesson, or some other feature that would be interesting for other people in the class to learn about. Second, try to make sure that this feature is rooted in organizational behavior, that it is not just a curious idiosyncrasy. So, for example, there is more to be learned from an analysis of why multiple people in a department are constantly unmotivated than from how a department lost motivation after its head suddenly quit to become a freelance cartoonist.

Recommended reflection paper structure:

Organizational Situation: X is an organizational situation I witnessed or been involved in. Here is why X is interesting. (Be explicit about this! Don’t assume we think it is interesting!).

Analysis: I argue that X exists because of Y. Here is how lectures and/or readings from this class support my argument.

Recommendations: Given the preceding analysis, I recommend Z. Here is how Z is rooted in the analysis. Here are the potential problems with Z.
