Assignment # 1

Bivariate correlation/regression for ERMA 7310/7316

The following data were collected by in graduate-level STAT 2 (ERMA 7310) research classes at a major Southeastern research institution. These data were collected from a convenient sample of 20 graduate students on variables such as gender, eye color, value of gift given to the instructor,

ERMA 7300/7306 (STAT 1) final grades, GRE Quantitative Scores, and ERMA 7310/7316 final grades.

Assignment: (20 points)

1. Data - Retrieve the data file that I already created for you.

2. Analysis

a. Correlation (4 points)

1) do this by hand using one of the many formulas explored in class.

You are encouraged to SPSS to get the necessary information for the calculations

(e.g. means, standard deviations, covariances, etc..)

b. Regression (4 points)

1) The regression equation (slope and intercept) for predicting ERMA 7310 grades (Y') from knowledge of ERMA 7300 grades (X).

2) Do this by hand as well. In doing these calculations, determine the slope (b) and intercept (a) and use these components to complete the regression equation necessary to predict the DV. Again, use SPSS to help with the calculations.

.

3. Interpretation (10 points)

a. Interpret the correlation between grades in ERMA 7300 and grades in ERMA 7310.

What verbal conclusions can be supported based on your results? (2 points)

b. What grade in ERMA 7310 would you predict for a student earning a grade of

88 in ERMA 7300? (2 points)

c. What does the obtained b coefficient tell you about the relationship between grades in ERMA 7300 and grades in ERMA 7310? (2 points)

d. What proportion of variance in ERMA 7310 grades is accounted for by grades in ERMA 7300? (1 point)

e. Can ERMA 7310 grades be predicted from ERMA 7300 grades?

Support your decision using multiples sources of information from your analyses.
