English paper
First, copy a paragraph of up to eight sentences from your research paper draft. Then do the following.
1. Word choice: select one word from the passage and suggest a synonym for it. Describe how changing that word would affect the style, such as making it more formal or less formal.
2. Sentences: take one sentence and break it up into two smaller sentences. (Don't create a fragment when you do this. Add transitions or structural words as needed in order to make two good sentences.) How does this change affect the way the ideas are presented ? (For instance, which idea now seems to be the more important one? Will the reader now have a harder or an easier time seeing the connections between ideas?)
3. Tone toward topic: describe the attitude you want readers to perceive toward the topic. Do you want them to be angry or amused or worried, for instance? What details or word choices have you used to help create that tone in the paragraph?
4. Tone toward audience: describe the impression you want the readers to get about you. What details or word choices did you use that will help to create that image?
