Assessment_2_task_instructions1.docx

Assessment 2 task instructions:

You are a volunteer in a public interest group that is focused on sustainability. You have been asked to write a short piece for the general public to communicate about the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation and how they are addressing sustainability issues. You can select environmental, social, or economic sustainability issues.

Write a short essay (750 words +/- 10%) about the importance of two (2) sustainability issues relating to the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation. This essay is for external use by the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation (AbCF). This means the AbCF is communicating to the public about what they are doing about sustainability.

You must discuss two sustainability issues that AbCF is addressing and why these sustainability issues are important for external stakeholders, and why AbCF is acting in the interest of the public. You should draw on your knowledge of two (2) of the commerce disciplines we have covered in the subject up until the end of Week 7 (Accounting, Actuarial, Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing). i.e. Issue 1 from the perspective of discipline X, and Issue 2 from the perspective of discipline Y.

The sustainability issues you select must be different from the two sustainability issues you chose in Assessment 1, and the discipline perspectives you select must also be different from the ones you used in Assessment 1.

You need to explain why you think these issues are important for external stakeholders and why AbCF is acting in the best interests of stakeholders. Draw the materials from the online modules, readings, and workshops to support your claims, but only reference where you are using specific evidence, or you’re a quoting.

Use a rhetorical writing style to make a persuasive argument that AbCF is acting in best interests of all stakeholders in relation to the sustainability issues you have identified. You should present the two issues and your explanation of those issues. When writing in a rhetorical style, you must do more than just present the facts. You must present a whole cohesive argument and not make assumptions about prior knowledge of your target audience.

Note: It is not sufficient to simply identify the sustainability issues. This is called ‘descriptive writing’. Descriptive writing is when we just describe what has happened, or what someone else thinks about a topic. Don’t just tell use ‘what’ happened. You need to explain ‘why’ or ‘how’ things happen. In this case, you need to explain to the public ‘why’ these sustainability issues are important to them, and you need to explain ‘how’ AbCF is addressing those issues, and ‘why’ the actions of AbCF are a benefit for the public.

Academic writing style

At university we are encouraged to write in a formal academic style. This usually means writing in the third person and using as much precision and formality as possible. This is all appropriate for a piece of academic writing but in this assessment, we have asked you to write for the general public and a formal academic style is inappropriate for that audience. So, what should you do?

BREAK THE RULES

Yes, that’s right. I’m telling you that you should write this essay in plain English and avoid any academic formality or jargon. I don’t want to see any sentences that start with Moreover, However, or Surprisingly. In this essay you are writing on behalf of the AbCF, so you should address the target audience (the public) as if you are the AbCF. This means you can say "we are doing XYZ" or "we think ....".

Headings

When we write essays, we do not use headings, we use topic sentences. Topic sentences provide an overview of what will be discussed in each paragraph. This helps the reader to orient themselves to what is coming next in the essay. We sometimes call this ‘road-mapping’ as it helps the reader to understand where they are going within the narrative.

When you wrote your report in Assessment 1, we encouraged you to write creative headings based on the topic of the section. Topic sentences are similar to this, but they are constructed as a complete sentence.

In the examples below we have taken some of the exemplar headings from the Assessment 1 task instructions and expanded them into topic sentences:

Heading The importance of employee motivation at Commbank

Topic sentence Employee motivation is a critical part of how Commbank approaches human resource management.

Heading Wages aren’t everything

Topic sentence Employee motivation and organisational commitment are driven by many non-monetary factors and not by wages and benefits alone.

Heading Conclusions

Topic sentence We conclude that Commbank has found a reasonable balance between monetary and non-monetary employee rewards and benefits, yet other motivational factors may still need further development.

Figures and tables

There are no figures and tables in an essay.

You may use any regular font, but make sure it looks professional. Use the same guidelines as Assessment 1.
