Understanding Physical Fitness Standards and Trends of the United States Army
The article “Secular Trends in the Physical Fitness of United States Army Infantry Units and Infantry Soldiers, 1976–2015” discusses the physical fitness standards and trends of the U.S. Army over the past few decades. It focuses specifically on Infantry Units and its soldiers.
When most people think of the U.S. Army, they might often imagine the G.I.Joe military themed action figure and assume that this is an accurate representation of the Army as a whole, when in fact it is not. Though the Army is made up of several different branches and units, Infantry is one of the most well know and as result we are all expected to be held to the standards of those in such units. Especially in regard to physical fitness.
Although the physical fitness standards ensure that soldiers remain healthy and in good shape, this belief creates problems within the army and as result, when not being met, these standards and trends can begin to cause strain on a soldier’s career. This then creates the organizational behavior problem, job dissatisfaction. How could one actually enjoy their job when they are constantly being faced with standards that they cannot meet?
The equity theory seems to relate most in this scenario. Through this theory, it appears that the input of physical fitness training (hard work), is rewarded with the output of strength and recognition within the workplace. Using this article as my foundation and the 3-step problem solving approach throughout this research paper, I will be able to define, identify and recommend a solution for the issue at hand.
