ART ANALYSIS

The painting selected as the subject of this analysis is very interesting to say the least. It depicts a river flowing through an urban area. There is a river, a bridge across the river several tall buildings and a few trees in the painting. The painting was painted on a cotton canvas. There are a number of shades of paint that are used in the painting. However, it is not very colorful and appears to be rather gloomy and has a mood of loneliness about it.

The art was acquired by my mother at a local art gala. The gala is usually held in the city every year. It consists of lots of art work from local artists as well as several renowned artists who come out to support the gala. An interesting thing about the gala is that it has the option of people having their art displayed anonymously. As a result, they can gauge the genuine reaction of the audience to their art with the audience being completely oblivious to the fact that they are responsible for the art in question. Such was the case for this painting. It was exhibited in the anonymous section of the gala. When my mother bought it she had the option of having the identity of the artist revealed to her. However, she chose not to know as it added to the mystique of the painting and by extension the mystique of the artist.

The painting is located in our living room. It is a center piece on the living room wall and is perhaps the most noticeable thing on the wall. It is located right above the family picture. Its central location in the living room is integral to drawing attention of any visitor to it. Its proximity to the family picture also paints a picture of a family that is art conscious and concerned about artistic expression.

This painting has a lot of meaning for me both personally as well as from the perspective of my family. We live in the city and this painting depicts the structure of the city. It depicts the beauty of the city by highlighting both natural as well as manmade features of the city. When I look at this painting I gain a deeper appreciation of the place where I live. I fall in love more and more with the city each day by just looking at this painting.

From a family point of view the painting represents perfect harmony. The river and the trees are clearly not traditional elements of a metropolis. However, there have been adjustments to the human infrastructure to ensure that natural features such as rivers are not affected. This reminds me of my family all the time. Despite all the differences that we have we often make adjustments to accommodate each other. Just like the feature of the painting our family lives in a state of perpetual harmony despite each family member having their own personal ideologies and interests.

The painting is clearly art. It is an expression of how the painter visualizes the city to be. The painter painted a picture where natural feature and manmade features exist in perfect harmony. The depiction of the various images in the painting is also precise and very proportional. Clearly the artist took their time to ensure that they delivered a product that would captivate an audience.
