Persuasion is an important part of everyday life. Each day in conversation, you make requests and demand. Less often - but far more important - you make written requests that employers consider you for a job, customers buy your products, or a government agency provide you with important documents. In college writing, you must persuade your instructor that your analysis, interpretation, or understanding of an issue is correct or reasonable.

 

Requirements for Outline:

· Follow outline structure. (See below).

· Take a clear position on a debate about a US cultural topic

· Must integrate multiple sources of evidence, including texts from the Miami library, personal experience, and first-hand research to defend their position. 

· Present your thesis statement, main ideas and counterarguments in your outline.

 

Outline Structure:

2. State the opponent's viewpoint on the subject (opposing viewpoint)

3. Draft the thesis statement (Your claim and preview of the subtopics)

4. Supportive detail/explanation to disprove counterargument

III. Paragraph 3

1. Topic Sentence (Subtopic 2)

2. Supportive detail/explanation

3. Counterargument to your controlling idea

4. Supportive detail/explanation to disprove counterargument

IV. Paragraph 4

1. Topic Sentence (Subtopic 3)

2. Supportive detail/explanation

3. Counterargument to your controlling idea

4. Supportive detail/explanation to disprove counterargument

V. Paragraph 5

1. Restate your position
