I believe that electronic music does not fit with the old school composers’ model. When new tools are brought into the picture, it causes a tremendous change to the art. This is because there is a massive difference between traditional instruments and sounds made by electronics. Traditional instruments, along with vocals, are raw and hard to change or edit. On the other hand, almost any sound made by electronics can be considered artificial because they can be edited in various ways, such as pitch and harmony.

Personally, I cannot pick sides when it comes to choosing whether electronic music is valued as much as traditional western music. I do believe that most traditional western songs have a greater meaning than most electronic music. One of the easiest ways to understand the meaning behind a song is through words. Lyrics allow the audience to take a look inside of a composer’s way of thinking as well as what they want to express through their music. However, most electronic music lacks lyrics, which makes it difficult for the audience to understand what the composer is attempting to convey.

The piece titled Clouds Forming Over Mount Baker by Kaitlyn Aurelia is more faithful to traditional classical western music as opposed Appalachian Grove I by Laurie Spiegel. Although it does not have lyrics, Kaitlyn Aurelia’s piece has much more raw and natural sounds. Spiegel’s piece is mainly composed of electronic sounds which makes it troublesome for the audience to connect with the composer through the piece.
