Josephsen, J. (2013). Teaching nursing delegation: An on-line case study. Teaching and Learning in Nursing 4(3), 83-87. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.teln.2013.03.002

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to evaluate the use of an online class to teach the implementation of delegation as a component of the nursing process.

Summary: Delegation is a fundamental component of the duties entrusted to a nurse. New graduates often feel ill-prepared to perform, citing a lack of knowledge and understanding. Problems were noted in the ability to teach and learn within the academic setting. The theoretical and instructional designs were developed through ANA delegation principles.

Nursing Implications:

1. Provides appropriate delegation for efficient, safe, and effective care

2. Maximizes scope of practice and decreases cost to the health care system

3. Improves patient and staff satisfaction

By practicing appropriate delegation, patients receive the most efficient and effective care. When practiced appropriately, this can influence the health care system greatly and reduce expenses. Job satisfaction for RNs, LVNs, and unlicensed personnel improves when the right job is done by the right person; the burden for all care can be distributed appropriately. This helps in recruiting and retaining nurses in the nursing profession.
