Nature Of The Study

The nature of the study justifies the selected methodology for addressing the research

forensic mental health services and thus help fill the gap in the literature.

Primary qualitative data will be collected with the help of semi-structured interviews

developed by a researcher with a purposeful sample of justice-involved racial and ethnic

minority adults who have experience in accessing or attempting to access forensic mental health

services. The interview guide will include open-ended questions to help participants elaborate on

their experiences in detail, without limiting opportunities to discuss emerging issues. Thematic

analysis based on Braun and Clarke's six-phase model will be applied to the interview transcripts

to reveal recurrent themes and patterns. Findings will be interpreted through the lenses of

Intersectionality Theory and Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, ensuring

alignment among the research problem, purpose, research question, data sources, and analysis

(Krzyż et al., 2023).

Thus, the chosen basic qualitative design allows for the systematic and rigorous

investigation of participants' perspectives on barriers to forensic mental health care. Planned data

collection and analysis methods seem appropriate for obtaining rich, context-based results that

will directly address the study's research question.
