The documentary “13th” directed by Ava DuVernay entails how modern-day prison is linked to slavery. Du Vernay explores the history of race and the criminal justice in America. DuVernay exposes the propagandized and perpetuated stereotype that portrays African American men as criminals. This is done not only to prove the existence of institutionalized racism in the American Judicial System, but also to prove slavery still exists in prison system. Additionally, this allows non-minorities to turn a blind eye, or even endorse the blatant exploitation of African American Men and other Minorities.

The main focus is the 13th amendment which abolishes slavery and Du Vernay delves into throughout the documentary. A plethora of statistics are included to provide concrete facts that depict the amount of people who are incarcerated in the U.S and a powerful yet factual tone is present to demonstrate the importance of the topic.

The documentary “13th” is a crime history documentary that will support my claim that racism and exploitation is continuous in the lives of African Americans. The factual information that is provided in the documentary regarding the history of race informs the audience about the root of oppression against African Americans.

Sorry to Bother You showcases the exploitation of African American in corporate America because telemarketing is a pyramid scheme in which cannot be escaped from. Telemarketers are creating profit for the company by calling callers nonstop and can barely make ends means while “power callers” are being compensated. Showcasing continuous impediments such as code switching that are present in minorities lives will strengthen the thesis, showing that those struggles caused assimilation to occur so they can fit into corporate America.

Hanks, Angela, et al. “Systematic Inequality.” Center for American Progress, 21 Feb. 2018, https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/race/reports/2018/02/21/447051/systematic-inequality/.

Weller, reports how economic wealth is essential provides opportunity and that unfortunately it is distributed by race. There are factors such as educational level in which are positive but still allow blacks to be economically stagnant. It is key to be cognizant that blacks are a minority as well as Hispanics or Asians in which are stuck in the vicious cycle of wealth inequality. This article mainly focuses on the disparities of minority households and compares them with White households in which there is greater wealth. The struggle of race combined with class is endless, despite the efforts to exonerate the discrimination that is continuously occurring and the impediments which prevent achieving the American Dream.

In a Center for American Progress article titled “Systemic Inequality” dated February 21, 2018, Angela Hanks, Danyelle Solomon, and Christian E. Weller, shows the wealth gap between blacks and WASP. It is evident that whites have been favored in certain aspects rather than blacks because “poor blacks and poor whites are not similarly situated because whites have been and continue to be treated more favorably than blacks by government institutions.” Wealth is an important tool that allows one to achieve economic stability, growth, and pursue an education. The fictional character in Sorry to Bother You Steve Lift the CEO of Worry-free camps is a prime example of exploitation because he creates a scheme to keep employees’ complaint by using human subjects and turning them into horses so they can be more productive. Meaning that Equisapien’s will become a new minority that will be exploited.

Riley, Boots. “Sorry to Bother You.” Hulu, 13 Dec. 2018, Hulu https://www.hulu.com/watch/c66b772e-75e9-43b1-bcb7-e09ce9e8582d.

The film directed by Boots Riley is a comedy-drama starring Lakeith Stanfield in which he depicts how the principles of money are compromised, the exploration of black identity and the suppression that occurs for management to become more profitable. Sorry to Bother you is the epitome of reality and mirrors society in the sense that it is absurd. An essential aspect in the film is code-switching because one is required to alter their expression to make it in corporate America. The film ensures to provide strife with the economy to demonstrate that capitalism is dreadful to the world. It also shows how enticing the workforce is because it persuades workers to ascend and keep taking chances which keeps them invested in their work.

The film directed by Boots Riley is the primary source for research about racism, oppression and struggles that African Americans face in the workforce. An aspect that is present throughout Sorry to Bother You is code-switching where the protagonist uses his “white voice” to fit in to corporate America. Altering one’s personality to advance is strategically advantageous but it will result in corroding oneself for the satisfaction of fitting in. The actuality of the film is key in establishing each idea to effectively research the presence of racism and oppression.

Williams, Jhacova, and Valerie Wilson. “Labor Day 2019: Black Workers Endure Persistent Racial Disparities in Employment Outcomes.” Economic Policy Institute, 27 Aug. 2019, https://www.epi.org/publication/labor-day-2019-racial-disparities-in-employment/.

In an Economic Policy Institute article called “Black workers endure persistent racial disparities in employment outcomes” dated August 27,2019, Jhacova William and Valerie Wilson report how Black workers are more likely to be unemployed than White workers. This suggests that high unemployment rate is a result of racial discrimination present in the workforce. Statistics demonstrate how essential African Americans are to the workforce, but they have exceptionally low rates of unemployment.

Underemployment is a usually adopted among blacks because they are underutilized to perform their duties and while being qualified is essential in receiving an occupation it fails to aid them as it is supposing too. This continuous discrimination is troubling, and inequality will persist the disparities if employment for African Americans in the U.S.

In an Economic Policy Institute article called “Black workers endure persistent racial disparities in employment outcomes” dated August 27,2019, Jhacova William and Valerie Wilson supports the thesis because it includes factual statistics that favor this investigation.

This source is similar to “Systemic Inequality” which essential reports how wealth, unemployment, and the fact that blacks are a minority that is trapped in an unbreakable cycle of inequality. Black Americans and Anglo-Saxons are compared and regardless of education, White Americans generate more income. It is important to be cognizant that dipartites persist for minorities in the workforce because it unjust that they need to continue this path unsuccessfulness.

In Sorry to Bother You systemic inequality is evident because it depicts how Cassius Green the protagonist of the film compromises the rules of money to become wealthy but at the same time is giving up his humanity because he is being exploited such as the employees that are participating in Lift’s Worry Free camps.
