article analysis 2
Topic: Analyze an assigned peer-reviewed qualitative investigation of suicidality in men.Must use the assigned article provided for you in this folder. The title of the article is: What interrupts suicide attempts in men: A qualitative study. Please note that this is an open-access article published by the journal PlosOne. Read the short handout from Simply Psychology provided for you in this folder. It provides a brief overview of qualitative methods versus quantitative methods. It also concisely explains some of the issues associated with generalizability in qualitative studies. You will still need to review chapter 3 in the APA manual (just review the rules for information recommended for inclusion in the qualitative manuscript.) Read chapter 3 in the APA manual, focusing on the rules for qualitative studies. Review Rubin and Babbie’s discussion of qualitative methods.
· All responses must be in complete, grammatically correct sentences. · Proof-read to ensure you have provided enough detail. · Include page numbers from the article to indicate where you found the answer for each question. · Cite your book when prompted to do so—be sure to provide the page number in the citation or the chapter and section number. · Paraphrase most content—do not cut and paste information from the article. If you must use quotes, follow APA conventions for quotes—include quotation marks around the verbatim content and include the page number in the citation. · If you simply cut and paste all content and paraphrase little to no information and if no analysis is evident, the project will earn a zero.

· APA journal article reporting standards (JARS) provide a set of rules for authors to follow when they publish a qualitative article. Some questions below will ask you to locate some of this information in the article. Some of the information you need will appear before the abstract and the introduction. Be sure to examine the headings for the article carefully, because JARS specifies that authors must provide information in specific sections of an article and headings help to orient you to the content. |

Question Answer |

1. Reference: provide a complete reference for this article in APA style—be sure to include the hanging indent and use double spacing. Please be aware that the citation format listed in the article is NOT APA style. 3 points. |
2. Funding and conflict of interest information: APA JARS for qualitative research recommends that authors acknowledge sources of funding, contributors, and indicate if there are any conflicts of interest. Do the authors provide this information, and if so, what do they say? Why should authors provide information about funding sources, contributions, and conflicts of interest? 2 points. |
3. Introduction content: APA JARS says that the introduction should state the purpose/goal/aims of the study. Do the authors provide this information, and if so, what do they say? Why is this purpose or goal important? 5 points |
4. Abstract content: APA JARS says that the abstract should state the problem under investigation, indicate the study design, including types of participants, analytic strategies, main findings, main implications. Must also include five keywords. Provide this information in the answer column to the right. If the authors do not provide some or all this information, indicate so. 5 points. |
5. Overview of research design: APA JARS says that the authors should describe the research design, how they gathered data, and that they should provide a rationale for the research design (why this design and not some other). If the authors used a particular theoretical framework, they should discuss it. Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it in the article (section and page), and what do the authors say about the design? 5 points. |
6. Participant information: APA JARS says that the authors should provide information on the participants, including how many, their demographic characteristics, and any perspectives the participants might have which could affect the results. Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it, and what do they say? (Section and page). 5 points. |
7. Participant selection: APA JARS says that the authors should describe participant selection processes—how did they sample? When and where were the data collected? Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it (section and page) and what do the authors say? 5 points |
8. Data collection. APA JARS says that the authors should describe how they collected their data (e.g., interviews, questionnaires, observation, etc.). Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it (section and page) and what do the authors say? 5 points |
9. Data analysis. APA JARS says that authors must describe how they analyzed the data (e.g., coding, thematic analysis) and whether coding categories were set before the study, or during the study. Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it (section and page) and what do the authors say? 5 points |
10. Findings/results. APA JARS says that authors must report the findings (themes, categories, narratives) and show how they reached their findings (quotes, excerpts from the data). Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it (section and page) and what do the authors say? 5 points. |
11. Discussion/limitations. APA JARS says that the authors must describe the contribution of their findings and explain the significance of the findings. At the same time, they must also describe the weaknesses or limitations of their study. This includes noting limitations to transferability of the findings. Do the authors provide this information, and if so, where is it (section and page) and what do the authors say? 5 points. |

Bonus question: How could the results of this study help the helping community meet needs? Be specific and relate this to your research methods book. Be sure to cite the book and give page or chapter and section numbers (2 points) |
